Chapter 3 - The Empire Crumbles

By morning, Grant's phone had become a stranger to him. His lawyer: voicemail. His dealership partner: "We should talk later this week." His Meridian keycard simply stopped working — access revoked overnight.
Vanessa left before dawn, pearl earrings zipped into her handbag with practiced speed. "This is getting complicated, Grant. I didn't sign up for this."
Twelve miles away, Arthur sat with his general counsel, Priya Nair, and his CFO. "Walk me through the exposure."
"His dealership stake is financed through a guarantee we can call. Without it, the bank recalculates his risk within days."
"Do it. Today."
"Meridian board seat already handled," his CFO added. "The chair wasn't eager to keep a member under investigation for domestic violence."
"The house?"
"Funded by you at the wedding. Very likely ends up entirely Claire's."
"It will," Arthur said. "She won't lose her home because of what he did in it."
Marcus spoke up. "There's the assault itself. Everything's documented. Claire hasn't decided about a police report."
"That decision belongs to her alone," Arthur said. "My job is making sure the ground under her is solid enough to stand on, whatever she chooses."
That morning, in her childhood bedroom, Claire pressed a hand to her stomach and felt, for the first time since the storm, something like relief settle beneath the fear.
Her father knocked. "How do you feel?"
"Sore. Scared. Angry." A small, humorless smile. "Mostly angry. That surprised me."
"Good. Anger is useful. Grief just sits there."
"You knew," she said. "About Grant. Even before last night."
"I suspected he married the name as much as the woman. I hoped I was wrong." His jaw tightened. "I won't make that mistake again."
Across town, Grant sat outside the dealership, staring at a text from the bank: Please contact our office regarding your credit facility. He didn't need to open it to understand.

He drafted three texts to Claire and deleted them all. There were no right words for a man who'd split his wife's lip open six times over a pair of earrings.
