Chapter 6 - Grant on His Knees

Six months out, Grant had run out of places to fall. Settlement money dwindled fast against legal fees and a lifestyle built for two incomes. The criminal record made hiring managers hesitate. Old Meridian friends stopped returning his calls.
He requested a meeting through his attorney, seven months after the storm — not to ask for anything, he insisted, just to say something in person.
Claire almost said no. Curiosity, and a refusal to let him still unsettle her, brought her to the table, Priya beside her, Marcus in the hallway.
Grant looked diminished — not physically, but as if scaffolding had been stripped away, revealing how much of his old strength had actually been Arthur's.
"I hit you. Six times. While you were pregnant. Then I threw you into a storm and expected you to crawl back, because I'd convinced myself that was how our marriage worked."
Claire said nothing, letting the silence work on him the way she'd learned it could.
"Your father said mercy was over. I didn't understand it then. I think he meant I'd used up whatever grace anyone was ever going to give me — including my own."
"No," Claire said quietly. "You shouldn't forgive yourself."
"I'm not asking to be part of the baby's life. I just wanted you to hear, from me, that I know what I destroyed. Not just the house or the business. You. I watched you get smaller for years and told myself that was just marriage."
Claire studied him. She thought of the curb, the rain, the counting.
"I appreciate you saying that," she said, and meant it distantly, the way you appreciate an apology from someone who no longer has power to hurt you. "But I don't need it. I have the medical records and the memory of exactly how cold that curb was. None of that needed your confession to be true." She stood. "I hope you do the work — not because I owe you forgiveness, but because somewhere in you a decent version might still exist. For your sake, not mine."

She left without waiting for a response.
