Chapter 2 - The Rank No One Expected

General Hayes crossed the ballroom with three senior officers behind him.

No one spoke as he approached Rachel.

Daniel stood frozen beside Caroline, whose confident smile had vanished.

Victoria remained seated.

“Deputy Director Monroe,” General Hayes said. “I wasn’t told you would be attending.”

Rachel held his gaze. “I’m here as Captain Whitmore’s wife, General.”

Hayes glanced at Daniel.

“Your wife?”

“Yes, sir,” Daniel answered.

The general’s expression hardened.

“You never mentioned that your wife was Rachel Monroe.”

Daniel swallowed. “I wasn’t aware her current position was public.”

“It isn’t,” Rachel said.

Victoria looked between them.

“This is ridiculous. Rachel worked for a government office. She told us she was an analyst.”

“I was an analyst,” Rachel replied. “Twelve years ago.”

General Hayes turned to the MPs.

“What happened?”

Sergeant Cole answered carefully. “Mrs. Whitmore reported Deputy Director Monroe as an unauthorized guest and requested her removal.”

Hayes stared at Victoria.

“You called military police on her?”

Victoria stood, clutching the edge of the table.

“I asked them to verify her identity. She was behaving aggressively.”

Rachel’s eyebrows lifted.

“I asked where my chair went.”

“You challenged me in public.”

“You humiliated me in public.”

Daniel stepped between them.

“Can we lower our voices?”

Rachel looked at him.

“You were very comfortable with your mother’s voice when she ordered me removed.”

“I didn’t know she would do that.”

“You saw her remove my seat.”

“I didn’t see anything.”

“You saw enough to walk away.”

Daniel glanced at the surrounding officers.

“Rachel, not here.”

She gave a small, humorless laugh.

“Your mother involved military police, but I’m the one embarrassing you?”

General Hayes raised one hand.

“This discussion should move somewhere private.”

Rachel nodded. “Agreed.”

Victoria exhaled in relief.

Then Rachel added, “But first, I want my identification returned to the security system. Someone canceled my event clearance two hours ago.”

Sergeant Cole looked surprised.

“Your clearance was canceled?”

“Yes.”

“How do you know?”

“My office notified me when the access record changed.”

Victoria’s face tightened.

Daniel noticed.

“Mom?”

“I don’t know anything about security records.”

Rachel watched her carefully.

General Hayes turned to his aide.

“Lock down the guest-access terminal. No records are to be altered.”

“Yes, sir.”

Victoria picked up her purse.

“This has gone far enough. I’m leaving.”

“No,” Rachel said.

The single word stopped her.

Victoria slowly turned.

Rachel’s voice remained calm.

“You accused me of entering a military event without authorization. Now we’re going to determine who removed my clearance.”

“I will not be interrogated by my son’s wife.”

“You won’t be. The Army will handle it.”

Daniel moved closer to Rachel.

“Please. She made a mistake.”

“A mistake is putting me at the wrong table. She removed my seat, canceled my access, and called armed officers to escort me from a federal installation.”

“You don’t know she canceled anything.”

“No,” Rachel said. “But you do.”

Daniel’s eyes flickered.

It lasted less than a second.

Rachel saw it.

“So you knew.”

His mouth opened.

“Rachel—”

“You knew my clearance had been changed.”

“I knew Mom asked someone to adjust the guest list.”

The ballroom seemed to close around them.

Rachel stared at him.

“And you let her?”

“I thought she was changing the seating.”

“Why would changing a chair require altering security access?”

Daniel rubbed a hand over his jaw.

“She said there were concerns about your background check.”

“My background check?”

“Your employment record is sealed.”

“Because it’s classified.”

“That’s what you told me.”

The words landed harder than Victoria’s insults.

Rachel took one slow breath.

“You didn’t believe me.”

Daniel looked away.

General Hayes spoke quietly.

“Captain, I suggest you answer your wife.”

Daniel’s voice dropped.

“My mother said there were inconsistencies. She said you might have exaggerated parts of your service.”

Rachel’s expression became unreadable.

They had been married for four years.

He had seen the scar beneath her ribs.

He had woken beside her when nightmares pulled her out of sleep.

He had held her while she struggled to breathe during thunderstorms because they sounded too much like distant artillery.

And he had still believed his mother.

Caroline stepped away from him.

Daniel noticed.

“Caroline, this doesn’t concern you.”

“It concerned me when your mother placed me in your wife’s chair,” she replied.

Victoria’s face sharpened. “I did no such thing.”

Caroline picked up the name card in front of her.

“There was another card underneath mine.”

She turned it over.

Rachel Whitmore was printed on the card beneath.

A ripple moved through the officers surrounding them.

Caroline placed both cards on the table.

“You removed her place card and put mine over it.”

Victoria’s composure cracked.

“I was trying to help Daniel.”

“No,” Rachel said. “You were trying to replace me.”

Daniel shook his head. “That’s not true.”

Rachel faced him.

“Then tell me why Caroline was seated beside you.”

“My mother planned it.”

“And you followed her to the receiving line.”

“General Hayes asked to meet with me.”

General Hayes frowned.

“No, I didn’t.”

Daniel went still.

Hayes looked at Caroline. “Did I ask you to bring Captain Whitmore to me?”

“No, Dad.”

All eyes turned to Victoria.

She gripped her purse with both hands.

“I may have misunderstood.”

Rachel stepped closer.

“What else did you misunderstand?”

Victoria said nothing.

Rachel studied the panic beneath her mother-in-law’s expression.

The missing seat had been cruel.

The canceled access had been dangerous.

But neither explained Daniel’s terror when Rachel showed the black card.

He had not looked merely surprised.

He had looked exposed.

Rachel turned to him.

“Why were you pale when they identified me?”

Daniel stared at her.

May you like

She repeated the question.

“What did you think I was about to discover?”
