Chapter 4 - The Mother’s Secret

No one left the conference room.

Colonel Reed asked Victoria to place her purse on the table.

She refused.

“You have no authority to search my belongings.”

Reed remained calm. “You are on a federal installation, and evidence suggests unauthorized access occurred using your son’s credentials.”

“I changed a guest list. That is all.”

Rachel studied Victoria’s grip on the purse.

“Then you won’t mind opening it.”

Victoria looked at Daniel.

“Tell them to stop.”

Daniel did not move.

“Mom, open the purse.”

Her expression shifted.

For the first time that evening, Victoria looked frightened.

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

Daniel’s voice cracked. “Open it.”

Victoria slowly placed the purse on the table.

Sergeant Cole searched it while another officer observed.

He removed lipstick, a wallet, keys, and a folded program from the Army ball.

Then he found a small flash drive.

Daniel stared at it.

“Mom?”

Victoria’s voice trembled. “That isn’t mine.”

Sergeant Cole placed it inside an evidence pouch.

Colonel Reed turned to Daniel.

“Did your mother have access to your home office?”

“Yes.”

“Your military laptop?”

“Sometimes. But it requires a password.”

Victoria spoke sharply. “Daniel, say nothing else.”

Rachel watched him.

“You gave her the password.”

Daniel looked ashamed.

“She helped me organize correspondence for the military family foundation.”

“You allowed a civilian to access your government computer?”

“It was only for event schedules and emails.”

General Hayes struck the table with his palm.

“Captain, there is no such thing as ‘only emails’ on a restricted system.”

Daniel flinched.

Victoria stood straighter.

“My son is an excellent officer. He was being overlooked because people without half his ability had better connections.”

General Hayes’s eyes narrowed.

“What did you do?”

“I helped him network.”

“With classified briefing material?”

“I never saw classified material.”

Rachel pointed at the flash drive.

“Then explain that.”

Victoria’s lips trembled.

“I copied files because I believed they concerned Daniel’s promotion. I intended to show them to a retired officer who advises our family.”

“What retired officer?” Reed asked.

Victoria hesitated.

“Richard Vale.”

General Hayes exchanged a look with Rachel.

Rachel knew the name.

Richard Vale had retired as a colonel eight years earlier. He now worked for a private defense contractor competing for a major communications contract.

The leaked briefing involved that exact contract.

Daniel lowered himself into a chair.

“Oh God.”

Rachel faced Victoria.

“You gave Vale the files?”

“I gave him background information.”

“Did you receive money?”

“No.”

“Did he promise Daniel a position after retirement?”

Victoria said nothing.

Daniel stared at her.

“Mom.”

“He said he could secure your future.”

“You sold classified information for a job?”

“I did not know it was classified!”

“You copied it from a restricted system!”

“I was helping you!”

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair fell backward.

“You destroyed me.”

Victoria’s face twisted with anger.

“Everything I did was because you lacked the courage to demand what you deserved.”

“I earned what I deserved.”

“No. You settled. You married a woman who made you feel small, and you allowed her secret career to overshadow you.”

Daniel looked at Rachel.

The shame on his face confirmed something she had avoided admitting.

Part of him agreed with his mother.

“You resented me,” Rachel said.

He shook his head weakly.

“No.”

“You resented every call you couldn’t overhear. Every assignment I couldn’t explain. Every time someone senior recognized my name while you were still trying to build yours.”

“I loved you.”

“That isn’t an answer.”

His silence became one.

Colonel Reed instructed the MPs to escort Victoria to the installation’s investigative office.

When Sergeant Cole approached, Victoria pulled away.

“You cannot arrest me.”

“You are being detained for questioning.”

Victoria looked at Rachel with raw hatred.

“This is your fault.”

Rachel did not raise her voice.

“You used your son’s credentials. You stole restricted files. You gave them to a defense contractor. Then you called police on me because you were afraid I would recognize what you’d done.”

“I was protecting my family.”

“No. You were controlling it.”

Victoria turned to Daniel.

“Tell them I made a mistake.”

Daniel’s eyes were wet, but his voice was steady.

“You didn’t make one mistake. You made a hundred choices and called them love.”

The MPs escorted her out.

When the door closed, Daniel sat down and covered his face.

General Hayes addressed Colonel Reed.

“Place Captain Whitmore on administrative leave. Confiscate all government devices and suspend his building access.”

Daniel lowered his hands.

“Am I under arrest?”

“Not at this time,” Reed answered. “Your cooperation will matter.”

Daniel nodded numbly.

Rachel moved toward the door.

“Rachel,” he said.

She stopped but did not turn.

“I truly didn’t know what she copied.”

“I believe you.”

Hope flickered across his face.

Then Rachel added, “But you gave her access. You searched my file. You lied to Caroline. And when your mother tried to have me removed, you walked away.”

Daniel’s hope disappeared.

“I can change.”

“Maybe.”

She turned to face him.

“But I will not remain your wife while you decide whether you’re capable of becoming an honest man.”

She left the room alone.

Outside, the ballroom was still crowded, but the music had resumed.

Every face turned toward her.

Rachel walked to Table Nine, retrieved her coat, and found Caroline standing beside the missing chair.

“I’m sorry,” Caroline said.

Rachel studied her.

“You believed we were separated.”

“I should have verified it.”

“Yes, you should have.”

Caroline accepted the rebuke.

“I never intended to take your place.”

Rachel looked at the name card still covering hers.

“Then don’t let anyone choose another woman’s place for you.”

Caroline nodded.

As Rachel walked away, General Hayes caught up with her.

“Deputy Director, Vale may run when he learns Victoria has been detained.”

Rachel slipped on her coat.

“Then don’t let him learn.”

Hayes watched her expression change from wounded wife to intelligence officer.

“What are you proposing?”

May you like

Rachel looked toward Daniel through the conference-room glass.

“We use the one person Vale still believes he controls.”
