Chapter 3 - What the Blanket Was Hiding

Nobody spoke.

My father stared at me.

Bruises covered my legs.

More ran along my arms and ribs.

Some were fading.

Others weren't.

Then his eyes stopped beside my swollen stomach.

A dark hand-shaped bruise marked my skin.

Dad stopped breathing.

I watched something disappear from his face.

The warmth.

The confusion.

The desperate hope that there had been another explanation.

Ryan swallowed.

“Sir…”

Dad didn't look at him.

“How long?”

I shook my head.

“Emily.”

“Dad, please.”

“How long?”

“Months.”

His eyes closed.

Linda immediately interrupted.

“That isn't what happened.”

Dad turned.

She stepped backward.

“She falls. She bruises easily because of the pregnancy.”

My father looked at me.

“Did you fall?”

I couldn't answer.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Colonel, marriages are complicated.”

Dad slowly stood.

“Complicated?”

“We've had arguments.”

“Arguments.”

“Yes.”

“And arguments did that?”

Ryan's mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

Dad pointed toward the bruise beside my belly.

“Did you put your hand there?”

“No.”

I flinched.

Dad saw it.

Ryan saw that Dad saw it.

“Emily,” Dad said quietly, “did Ryan hurt you?”

Ryan interrupted.

“Don't answer that.”

Dad turned.

“Say that again.”

Ryan's confidence disappeared.

Linda stepped between them.

“William, you're making this worse.”

Dad looked at her.

“Did you know?”

“Know what?”

“Did you know he was hurting her?”

“No!”

I spoke before fear could stop me.

“She knew.”

Linda spun toward me.

“Emily!”

Dad's eyes hardened.

“What did she know?”

My voice trembled.

“She saw.”

“Emily, stop,” Ryan snapped.

My father stepped between us.

“Keep talking.”

I stared at Dad's back.

For the first time in months, someone was standing between Ryan and me.

So I told the truth.

“She saw him shove me.”

Linda shook her head.

“You were arguing.”

“She saw what happened in the kitchen.”

“That was an accident.”

“She helped him hide my phone.”

Dad looked at Linda.

“You took her phone?”

“For her own well-being.”

My father stared at her in disbelief.

Then heavy footsteps sounded outside.

Ryan's face changed.

Linda went pale.

Dad didn't react.

I looked toward the doorway.

“Dad?”

He took out his phone.

“When you stopped answering video calls, I asked two people I trust to drive me here after the ceremony.”

The apartment door opened.

Two soldiers from my father's staff entered the hallway, but they stopped well outside the bedroom.

One spoke.

“Colonel?”

Dad never took his eyes off Ryan.

“Call 911.”

Ryan stepped backward.

“Wait.”

Dad continued.

“Tell them we have a pregnant woman who needs immediate medical evaluation and that she has reported domestic abuse.”

“Dad—”

He turned to me.

“I'm not leaving you here.”

Ryan moved toward the door.

Dad's officer blocked the hallway without touching him.

“Move,” Ryan demanded.

“Sir, please remain here until police arrive.”

Ryan looked at my father.

“You brought soldiers into my home?”

Dad shook his head.

“No.”

His voice remained controlled.

“I brought witnesses.”

Sirens sounded several minutes later.

Ryan began pacing.

“This is insane.”

Linda pointed at me.

“Look what you're doing to this family.”

Something inside me finally broke.

“No.”

Everyone looked at me.

I pushed myself upright.

“Look what you did to me.”

Linda froze.

“You let him convince me I deserved this.”

“Emily—”

“You told me nobody would believe me.”

“I never said that.”

“You said Dad would think I was unstable.”

Linda's mouth closed.

Ryan stared at me.

“Baby, don't do this.”

I looked at him.

“Don't call me that.”

Police entered.

Then paramedics.

One officer approached the bed.

“Ma'am, are you Emily Carter?”

“Yes.”

“Do you feel safe here?”

I looked at Ryan.

For months, I had rehearsed the lie.

Yes.

Everything is fine.

I'm clumsy.

Pregnancy is hard.

Instead, I looked at my father.

He said nothing.

He didn't need to.

I faced the officer.

“No.”

That single word changed my life.

May you like

“I don't feel safe.”
