Chapter 4 - The Truth at the Hospital

The hospital examination took hours.
Dad stayed beside me.
Ryan wasn't allowed into the treatment area.
Neither was Linda.
A doctor named Dr. Patel examined me carefully.
“We're going to check the baby first.”
I grabbed Dad's hand.
“Is she okay?”
“We'll find out.”
The monitor came alive.
Then came the sound I had been terrified I would never hear again.
My daughter's heartbeat.
Strong.
Steady.
I burst into tears.
Dad lowered his head.
“Thank God.”
Dr. Patel smiled.
“Her heartbeat looks reassuring.”
“She's okay?”
“We need additional monitoring, but right now she's doing well.”
Dad squeezed my hand.
“You hear that?”
I nodded.
“My little fighter.”
His face changed.
“You're both fighters.”
After the examination, the doctor documented my injuries.
A detective arrived shortly afterward.
Detective Maria Torres pulled a chair beside me.
“Emily, I know you've already answered questions. I need to ask more.”
Dad started to stand.
“Colonel Bennett can stay,” I said.
Torres nodded.
“Only if that's what you want.”
“It is.”
She opened her notebook.
“Who caused your injuries?”
I stared at my hands.
“Ryan.”
Dad didn't move.
Torres continued.
“Your husband?”
“Yes.”
“How long has this been happening?”
“About nine months.”
Dad looked at me.
“Before the pregnancy?”
“Yes.”
His jaw tightened.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
I started crying.
“Because he said you'd kill him.”
Dad's expression changed.
“And then what?”
“You'd lose everything.”
“Emily…”
“He said you'd go to prison. He said your career would end. He said it would be my fault.”
Dad leaned toward me.
“Look at me.”
I did.
“Ryan used your love for me to keep you silent.”
I nodded.
“He knew exactly what would scare me.”
Dad's eyes filled.
“He knew I'd come.”
“Yes.”
“That wasn't something to fear.”
I whispered, “I know that now.”
Detective Torres waited before continuing.
“Was anyone else involved?”
“Linda never hit me.”
“But?”
“She covered for him.”
“How?”
“She canceled appointments. She told people I was emotionally unstable. She took my phone sometimes.”
Torres wrote everything down.
“She told Ryan what I said when I tried asking her for help.”
Dad stared at the floor.
Then Torres asked the question I had dreaded.
“Do you want to cooperate with charges?”
My stomach twisted.
“What happens if I do?”
“We investigate. Evidence determines what charges prosecutors pursue. But I need the truth.”
“What happens if I don't?”
Torres looked directly at me.
“Then you go back to deciding your life around what Ryan might do.”
That answer stayed with me.
Dad didn't tell me what to choose.
He simply held my hand.
I finally said, “I'll cooperate.”
That evening, Ryan called the hospital repeatedly.
I refused every call.
Then he sent a message.
We need to talk before you destroy our family.
I showed Dad.
He read it twice.
“Interesting.”
“What?”
“He still thinks you're the one destroying it.”
Another message arrived.
Your father won't be around forever.
Dad read that one.
His expression changed.
“Detective Torres needs to see this.”
“Dad…”
He looked at me.
“We do this correctly.”
“What do you mean?”
“No threats. No revenge. No giving Ryan anything he can use against you.”
I stared at him.
“You're not going after him?”
Dad shook his head.
“I've spent thirty years serving a country governed by laws. I'm not throwing that away because Ryan wants me angry.”
He handed the phone back.
“He's going to answer for what he did.”
“How?”
“In court.”
That frightened me more than shouting.
Because my father wasn't losing control.

He was making sure Ryan lost his.
