Chapter 5 - Ryan's Perfect Story Falls Apart

Ryan hired an attorney.
Then he started telling people I was unstable.
Exactly as Dad predicted.
His attorney claimed pregnancy had affected my memory.
Linda told neighbors I bruised easily.
Ryan insisted my father had pressured me into making accusations because he'd never approved of our marriage.
For forty-eight hours, I wondered whether they might actually succeed.
Then Detective Torres called.
“We found something.”
Dad and I met her at the station.
She placed several printed photographs on the table.
“What are these?”
“Security-camera stills from your apartment building.”
My stomach dropped.
One image showed Ryan dragging me by the arm through the hallway three weeks earlier.
Another showed Linda standing at our apartment door, looking directly at us.
Dad stared at the photographs.
“She saw.”
Torres nodded.
“There’s more.”
The building superintendent had saved footage because Ryan had damaged a hallway light during one incident.
Then came medical records.
Three appointments Linda had canceled.
Emails Ryan had sent pretending to be me.
Messages between Ryan and his mother.
Torres slid one across the table.
I read it.
RYAN: Her dad keeps calling.
LINDA: Keep Emily off video. Tell him she's sleeping.
Another.
RYAN: Bruises are getting worse.
LINDA: Then she stays home until they're gone.
My father pushed the paper away.
“I've seen enough.”
I hadn't.
For months, Ryan had made me question my own memory.
Now his own words were giving it back to me.
The case moved quickly.
Ryan violated a temporary protective order by appearing outside my father's house.
Police arrested him.
Linda was investigated for her role in concealing what had happened and interfering with my access to help.
Several weeks later, I saw Ryan during a court hearing.
He looked different.
Smaller.
He stared at me across the courtroom.
When we stepped into the hallway afterward, he called my name.
“Emily.”
My attorney stopped.
I turned.
Ryan's lawyer whispered something to him.
Ryan ignored it.
“We can fix this.”
I almost laughed.
“Fix what?”
“Our marriage.”
“You hurt me.”
“I was stressed.”
“You hurt me while I was pregnant.”
His face tightened.
“I never meant to hurt the baby.”
My father stood several feet behind me.
Ryan noticed him.
“Your father poisoned you against me.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“My father pulled back a blanket.”
Ryan stared at me.
“And everything underneath it was your work.”
“Emily, I love you.”
“That isn't love.”
“You're really going to throw away our entire life?”
I touched my stomach.
“No.”
My daughter kicked.
I looked down and smiled.
“I'm finally saving it.”
I walked away.
Dad followed.
Outside, he opened the car door for me.
Before I got inside, I looked at him.
“Dad?”
“Yeah?”
“Thank you for coming that day.”
His expression softened.
“I should've come sooner.”
“You didn't know.”
“I knew something was wrong.”
“But you came.”
He nodded.
Then I asked something I had been afraid to ask.
“Are you disappointed in me?”
His face fell.
“For what?”
“For staying.”
He immediately shook his head.
“No.”
“But I lied to you.”
“You were surviving.”
“I should've told you.”
“Maybe.”
He took my hand.
“But shame belongs to the person who hurt you, not the person trying to make it through the day.”
I hugged him.
For the first time in months, I felt safe.
But my story wasn't finished.
My daughter still had two months before her due date.
May you like
She had other plans.
