Chapter 2 - The Order She Warned Them About
At 11:23, Daniel stood behind the replacement engineer.
“What changed?”
“Nothing.”
“That’s impossible.”
“Tell the screen.”
Another warning appeared.
Then another.
Transactions that normally took milliseconds were hanging for ten, twelve, fifteen seconds.
Daniel looked toward Emily’s empty desk.
Her notebook was gone.
“Where’s Carter’s notebook?”
The replacement engineer shrugged.
“Bruno took everything.”
Daniel’s stomach tightened.
He found Bruno in the glass conference room.
“Sir?”
“What?”
“The network is slowing.”
“I can see that.”
“Emily warned us.”
Bruno stared at him.
“Emily was fired.”
“She said not to restart the central server.”
“And?”
Daniel hesitated.
“She texted me.”
Bruno’s expression changed.
“What did she say?”
“That I should read her notebook.”
A long silence.
“Delete the message.”
Daniel blinked.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
“Why?”
“Because a terminated employee contacting staff after dismissal is a security violation.”
Daniel finally understood.
This wasn’t about procedure.
Bruno was afraid.
At 11:41, Alessandro entered the operations center.
“What happened?”
Bruno immediately approached.
“We believe Carter left the system unstable.”
Daniel looked at him in disbelief.
Alessandro’s eyes moved toward the screens.
“Solution?”
Bruno answered instantly.
“Full restart.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“No.”
Every head turned.
Alessandro looked at him.
“What did you say?”
Daniel swallowed.
“Emily specifically warned us not to restart.”
Bruno snapped, “Daniel.”
“She said the restart would trigger something.”
Bruno shook his head.
“She was trying to frighten everyone after being dismissed.”
Alessandro looked at Daniel.
“Can you prove her warning?”
“No.”
“Then we restore the system.”
Daniel’s pulse accelerated.
“Mr. Moretti—”
“Restart it.”
Bruno turned toward the console.
“Do it.”
The engineer entered the command.
Daniel whispered, “Please don’t.”
The screen went black.
One second.
Two.
Three.
Four.
The monitors came back.
For half a second, everything looked normal.
Then every screen turned red.
Alarms erupted.
“What the hell is that?” Alessandro demanded.
An engineer shouted from across the room.
“Unauthorized outbound transfers!”
“Stop them.”
“We can’t!”
“Disconnect external routing.”
“It’s ignoring commands!”
Daniel stared at the transaction map.
Hundreds of lines were spreading outward.
London.
Zurich.
Singapore.
Cayman accounts.
Shell companies.
Reserve funds.
Someone had been waiting for the restart.
Alessandro grabbed the back of an empty chair.
“How much?”
“Twenty-two million.”
Another engineer shouted.
“Thirty-one!”
“Forty-six!”
Bruno went pale.
Alessandro slowly turned toward him.
“You said restart.”
Bruno swallowed.
“Sir, nobody could have predicted—”
“One person did.”
Daniel said it quietly.
Everyone heard him.
Alessandro looked at Emily’s empty chair.
“How long before we lose control?”
Daniel studied the screen.
“Maybe twenty minutes.”
“Call Carter.”
Bruno immediately said, “That would be dangerous.”
Alessandro turned.
“Why?”
“She could be involved.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“You don't know that.”
Daniel pulled out his phone.
“She spent forty-eight hours trying to stop this.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I saw her here.”
He looked directly at Alessandro.
“She didn’t go home for two days.”
Alessandro said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“She ate from the vending machine. She slept maybe twenty minutes yesterday afternoon before another alert woke her. She was running between four terminals because half the night team didn’t understand what she was seeing.”
Alessandro’s expression changed.
Just slightly.
“Why wasn't I told?”
Daniel looked toward Bruno.
That was enough.
Alessandro turned.
“Where is her notebook?”
Bruno hesitated.
“Her materials were collected after termination.”
“Where?”
“I’m not certain.”
Alessandro stepped closer.
“Bruno.”
“In my office.”
“Bring it.”
Bruno did not move.
Alessandro’s voice dropped.
“Now.”
Five minutes later, Alessandro opened Emily’s notebook.
The final page contained a handwritten warning surrounded by three boxes.
SLEEPING TRIGGER INSIDE CORE CLUSTER.
Beneath it:
DO NOT RESTART.
Then:
RESTART REMOVES TEMPORARY DEFENSE. OUTBOUND CASCADE BEGINS IMMEDIATELY.
Alessandro stared at the words.
The alarms continued behind him.
Daniel said quietly, “She tried to tell you.”
Alessandro closed the notebook.
