Chapter 5 - Four Minutes to Midnight

By 8:17 that evening, the operations center looked like a battlefield fought entirely with numbers.

Coffee cups covered desks.

Engineers moved between stations.

Emily had been awake again for nearly eight hours.

Alessandro noticed her hand trembling.

“Eat.”

“I’m busy.”

“You nearly collapsed this morning.”

“I was fired this morning.”

“You're going to remind me forever, aren't you?”

“If we survive.”

Daniel turned from his monitor.

“We have a problem.”

Emily moved beside him.

“What?”

“The attackers are changing strategy.”

A countdown appeared.

00:19:42.

Alessandro frowned.

“What is that?”

Emily’s face went still.

“They installed a dead-man sequence.”

“Meaning?”

“If they lose access completely, the network destroys its own transaction index.”

Daniel whispered, “We lose the ledger.”

Alessandro understood immediately.

Years of records.

Ownership trails.

Debt agreements.

Partner balances.

Everything that allowed his network to know who owned what.

“How do we stop it?”

Emily studied the code.

“We need the original encryption key.”

“Where?”

“Bruno's account generated it.”

Alessandro called security.

“Bring Bruno.”

Minutes later, Bruno was returned.

His arrogance was gone.

Emily turned the monitor toward him.

“Encryption key.”

“I don’t know it.”

“You generated it.”

“The attackers did.”

“Through your account.”

“I never saw it.”

Emily studied him.

Then she noticed Bruno glance toward the notebook.

She understood.

“You did see it.”

“No.”

“You wrote it somewhere.”

“No.”

Emily walked toward her desk.

She flipped through the notebook.

Nothing.

Then she looked underneath the keyboard.

A small adhesive note was stuck beneath the edge.

Daniel stared.

“That's not yours.”

“No.”

Emily pulled it free.

Six groups of characters.

Bruno closed his eyes.

Emily smiled.

“Thank you.”

She entered the sequence.

The countdown stopped at:

00:03:51.

Silence.

Then Daniel shouted.

“We have control!”

Engineers erupted.

Someone clapped.

Another person laughed.

Emily simply leaned back.

Alessandro looked at the main screen.

All outbound routes stabilized.

Reserve accounts locked.

Foreign partners reconnected.

The empire was alive.

Emily closed her eyes.

“It's over.”

Alessandro shook his head.

“No.”

She opened them.

He looked toward Bruno.

“The attack is over.”

Then he looked at Emily.

May you like

“What happened this morning isn't.”
