Chapter 6 - The Apology Nobody Expected
At 9:00 the next morning, every employee in the operations division was ordered into the main conference hall.
Emily did not want to attend.
Daniel convinced her.
“You need to hear this.”
“I need twelve hours of sleep.”
“You can sleep afterward.”
When Emily entered, conversations stopped.
Alessandro stood at the front.
Bruno's chair was empty.
Alessandro waited until Emily sat.
Then he addressed the room.
“Yesterday morning, I fired Emily Carter.”
Nobody moved.
“I believed I was enforcing discipline.”
Emily watched him carefully.
“I was wrong.”
Several people exchanged surprised looks.
Men like Alessandro Moretti rarely admitted mistakes publicly.
He continued.
“Emily had spent forty-eight hours protecting this network from an attack that should have been reported to me three days earlier.”
His eyes moved across the room.
“Her supervisor suppressed that report.”
Silence.
“I saw her asleep and decided I understood the entire situation.”
He looked directly at Emily.
“I did not.”
Emily held his gaze.
“I refused to let her finish a sentence.”
Nobody dared breathe loudly.
“She warned me not to restart the server.”
Alessandro paused.
“I ignored her.”
Daniel looked down, hiding a smile.
“The restart triggered the attack she had predicted.”
Alessandro placed Emily’s silver badge on the table.
“She returned anyway.”
Emily looked at it.
“She saved the network.”
Then Alessandro said something nobody expected.
“And she saved me from my own arrogance.”
The room remained silent.
Alessandro walked toward Emily.
He placed the badge in front of her.
“I am offering you your position back.”
Emily looked at it.
“No.”
Whispers spread through the room.
Alessandro seemed unsurprised.
“Why?”
“Because nothing changes if I return to the same job.”
“What do you want?”
Emily stood.
“Independent authority over network security.”
“Granted.”
“Direct reporting access to you.”
“Granted.”
“Engineers can escalate critical threats without supervisor permission.”
“Granted.”
“Mandatory rotation so nobody works forty-eight hours again.”
Alessandro nodded.
“Granted.”
Emily continued.
“And Daniel gets promoted.”
Daniel nearly choked.
“Emily.”
She ignored him.
“He listened when everyone else decided I was dramatic.”
Alessandro looked at Daniel.
“Deputy security director.”
Daniel stared.
“Sir?”
“Don't make me repeat myself.”
“Yes, sir.”
Emily finally picked up the badge.
Alessandro lowered his voice.
“Is that a yes?”
“It's probation.”
“For you?”
Emily looked him directly in the eye.
“For you.”
A few people laughed nervously.
Alessandro smiled.
