Chapter 1

The Girl Behind the Ashford Name
For the first week after Maeve entered the Marchetti estate, she expected the truth to collapse.
Every morning she woke up believing someone would discover the lie.
A document would be questioned.
A mistake would be found.
Someone would realize she was not an Ashford.
She was only Maeve Donnelly.
The housekeeper.
The woman who had spent years cleaning rooms where powerful people made decisions that changed lives.
But somehow, the secret remained hidden.
Because the Marchetti family did not investigate the way normal people did.
They watched.
They waited.
They measured.
And Elias Marchetti watched her more than anyone.
Maeve noticed it immediately.
Every conversation.
Every movement.
Every reaction.
Nothing escaped him.
One evening, she found him alone in the library.
The room was dark except for the city lights coming through the windows.
Elias sat beside the fireplace, a glass of untouched whiskey on the table.
“You don’t sleep much.”
Maeve stopped.
She had not expected him to speak.
“I could say the same about you.”
His eyes lifted.
“You’re comfortable answering questions.”
“You ask them like you expect people to be afraid.”
A faint smile appeared.
“Most people are.”
“I’m not most people.”
“No.”
Elias studied her.
“You’re not.”
The silence between them was strange.
Not uncomfortable.
Just unfamiliar.
Because for the first time in years, Elias was sitting across from someone who did not want anything from him.
“What did your father teach you?” he asked.
Maeve looked confused.
“My father?”
“Yes.”
She hesitated.
“He taught me that people show who they are when nobody is watching.”
Elias looked away.
“And what do you think I am?”
Maeve thought carefully.
“A man who expects betrayal.”
His expression changed slightly.
“That’s a dangerous assumption.”
“It’s not an assumption.”
She looked at his wheelchair.
“It’s obvious.”
Elias became still.
Most people avoided mentioning it.
They looked away.
They pretended.
Maeve did not.
“You think I’m weak now.”
“No.”
“Then what?”
She answered honestly.
“I think you hate needing anyone.”
For several seconds, Elias said nothing.
Because she was right.
And he hated that she was right.
---
Meanwhile, Sienna Ashford was losing patience.
She had expected Elias to beg.
To call.
To ask why.
But he did nothing.
No messages.
No anger.
No attempt to save their relationship.
Instead, rumors started spreading.
Elias Marchetti was engaged again.
To a mysterious Ashford daughter.
Sienna arrived at her mother’s house furious.
“This is impossible.”
Margaret looked up from her paperwork.
“You made your choice.”
“I didn’t think he would replace me.”
Margaret laughed quietly.
“You thought a man like Elias Marchetti would remain alone?”
Sienna clenched her fists.
“That woman is nobody.”
Margaret looked at her.
“Be careful.”
“Why?”
“Because nobody is sometimes the person who destroys everything.”
---
Three weeks later, Elias and Maeve attended their first public event together.
The Chicago elite gathered inside a luxury hotel ballroom.
Everyone wanted to see the woman who replaced Sienna Ashford.
Maeve could feel the judgment.
The whispers.
The questions.
Who was she?
Where had she come from?
Why had Elias chosen her?
As they entered, Elias noticed her hand tightening around his arm.
“You’re nervous.”
“A little.”
“You can leave.”
Maeve looked at him.
“What?”
“You don’t have to prove anything.”
She studied his face.
“Do you believe that?”
Elias did not answer.
Because he didn’t.
Maeve looked around the room.
“Everyone here thinks I’m lucky.”
“They do.”
“They think I married a powerful man.”
“Yes.”
She looked at him.
“But they don’t know I married a lonely one.”
The words hit harder than she expected.
Elias looked away.
Before he could respond, a man approached.
Victor Bellini.
A businessman with a smile too confident for his own safety.
“Mr. Marchetti.”
Elias nodded.
“Victor.”
Victor looked at Maeve.
“So this is the new Mrs. Marchetti.”
Maeve smiled politely.
“Yes.”
Victor leaned closer.
“Interesting.”
Elias’s expression changed.
“What?”
Victor smiled.
“I just didn’t realize the Ashfords had another daughter.”
The ballroom became quieter.
Maeve felt the danger immediately.
But Elias only looked at Victor.
Coldly.
“Are you questioning my wife?”
Victor immediately stepped back.
“Of course not.”
“Good.”
Elias’s voice lowered.
“Because I dislike people who forget their place.”
Victor left.
Maeve looked at him.
“You defended me.”
Elias looked forward.
“You are my wife.”
Not yet.
Not really.
But something about the way he said it made her heart beat faster.
---
That night, Maeve found something unexpected.
A folder.
Hidden inside the study.
Her name was written on it.
Maeve Ashford.
Her hands shook as she opened it.
Inside were investigation reports.
Her entire life.
Her brother.
Her childhood.
Her real identity.
Everything.
Elias knew.
He had always known.
The next morning, she confronted him.
“You knew.”
Elias looked up from his desk.
The room became silent.
“You knew I wasn’t an Ashford.”
“Yes.”
Maeve felt betrayed.
“Then why?”
“Why what?”
“Why let me come here?”
Elias stood slowly.
For a second, Maeve forgot everything.
Because his movement was not normal.
He moved carefully.
Controlled.
Like someone hiding something.
“You wanted the truth?”
She stared.
“Yes.”
“Then here it is.”
Elias stepped closer.
“I knew you were lying.”
Maeve’s eyes widened.
“But I also knew why.”
“Daniel.”
Elias nodded.
“Your brother’s surgery.”
She looked away.
“How much do you know?”
“Everything.”
“Then you know I didn’t come here for you.”
“Yes.”
That answer hurt more than she expected.
Elias continued.
“And that’s exactly why I trusted you.”
Maeve looked back.
“What?”
“Everyone else wanted something from me.”
He looked at her.
“You needed something from me.”
A pause.
“But you never pretended otherwise.”
Maeve had no answer.
Because for the first time…
She realized Elias Marchetti did not hate her lie.
May you like
He respected the reason behind it.
