Chapter 2

The Man in the Wheelchair Who Stood Up for Her
Three months after Maeve entered the Marchetti estate, Chicago began asking a different question.
Not:
“Who is Maeve Ashford?”
But:
“How did she change Elias Marchetti?”
Because the man everyone feared had become different.
Not softer.
Never that.
But calmer.
He listened when Maeve spoke.
He asked about Daniel’s surgery.
He remembered small details.
Things no one expected from him.
One evening, Maeve found him working late.
“You’re avoiding dinner.”
Elias didn’t look up.
“I’m busy.”
“That’s your excuse every night.”
“You’re keeping track?”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared.
“You’re difficult.”
“So I’ve been told.”
She placed a plate beside him.
“Eat.”
Elias looked at the food.
Then at her.
“You order me around often.”
“Someone has to.”
Nobody had ever spoken to Elias that way.
And strangely…
He liked it.
---
The attack happened two days later.
Not an explosion.
Not a dramatic war.
Something quieter.
More dangerous.
Two men entered the Marchetti estate pretending to be delivery workers.
They reached the main hall before security reacted.
Maeve was there.
With Elias.
The men looked at him.
Then at the wheelchair.
One of them smiled.
“So this is the great Elias Marchetti.”
Maeve immediately stepped between them.
“Leave.”
Elias’s expression changed.
“Maeve.”
She didn’t move.
“You heard me.”
The men laughed.
“You’re protecting him?”
“Yes.”
“He can’t even stand.”
The words filled the room.
And something inside Elias changed.
Because he had spent months watching people judge him.
But Maeve?
She never did.
She believed in him before she knew the truth.
Then the man reached toward her.
Elias moved.
Fast.
Too fast.
The room froze.
Because Elias Marchetti stood.
Not slowly.
Not with difficulty.
He stood completely.
The men stared.
Maeve stared.
Everyone stared.
Elias looked at them.
The wheelchair behind him suddenly felt like a forgotten disguise.
His voice was quiet.
“You made one mistake.”
Nobody moved.
“You believed the chair was my weakness.”
Security rushed in seconds later.
The men were taken away.
But Maeve could not look away from Elias.
“You can walk.”
Silence.
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Since the beginning.”
Her face changed.
“You lied to me.”
Elias looked at her.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
And for the first time…
He had no powerful answer.
Because the truth was simple.
He was afraid.
Afraid that if he showed his strength, she would become like everyone else.
But Maeve whispered:
“I would have stayed.”
Those four words hurt more than anger.
Because Elias realized something.
He had spent months testing her loyalty.
May you like
But she had never once tested his.
