Chapter 2 - The Debt She Never Knew Existed

By sunrise, Vivienne learned one terrible truth.

The world had already decided her fate.

She sat inside Alessio's private office above the Cinder Club.

The room was silent except for the rain tapping against the windows.

Nico Renzi stood near the door.

Alessio sat behind his desk, reading a file.

Her file.

Vivienne hated how calm he looked.

"You really enjoy knowing everything about everyone, don't you?"

Alessio didn't look up.

"It keeps me alive."

"It also makes you arrogant."

Nico almost smiled.

Nobody spoke to Alessio like that.

Especially not after saving his life.

Alessio closed the folder.

"Your father wasn't just in debt."

Vivienne's expression changed.

"What does that mean?"

"He wasn't borrowing money from the Grecos."

"Then why were they chasing him?"

"Because he stole from them."

Her face went pale.

"My father was a lot of things."

She shook her head.

"But he wasn't a criminal."

Alessio watched her carefully.

"Everyone says that about someone they love."

The words hurt because they sounded true.

"What did he steal?"

"Information."

"What kind?"

"Information that could destroy the Greco family."

Vivienne laughed bitterly.

"So my missing father left me with a death sentence?"

"No."

Alessio leaned forward.

"He left you with something they haven't found."

She looked confused.

"What?"

"We don't know."

"Then why are you talking to me?"

"Because the Grecos believe you know."

"I don't."

"I believe you."

The answer surprised her.

She stared at him.

"Why?"

"Because you had every reason to let me die last night."

Silence.

"You could have walked away."

"I couldn't."

"Exactly."

His eyes remained fixed on hers.

"People who have nothing to hide usually don't risk everything for strangers."

Vivienne looked down.

She hated that he understood her.

"What happens now?"

Alessio stood.

"Now you leave Manhattan."

Her eyebrows lifted.

"Excuse me?"

"You disappear."

"From my own life?"

"Until this is over."

She stood immediately.

"No."

Alessio stopped.

"No?"

"I spent six months cleaning up my father's mistakes. I worked nights. I ignored threats. I let people treat me like I was guilty because he disappeared."

Her voice became stronger.

"I'm not running."

Nico looked impressed.

Alessio looked almost amused.

"You realize you're refusing an order from a man people fear."

"I realize I'm talking to a man who thinks money and power solve everything."

"And you think they don't?"

"I think people matter more."

The room became quiet.

For a moment, Alessio said nothing.

Then:

"You really don't know who you're talking to."

Vivienne stepped closer.

"I know exactly who you are."

"No, you don't."

"I know you're dangerous."

His expression darkened.

"I know you're powerful."

She continued.

"But last night, when everyone else was watching you like you were untouchable, I saw something different."

Alessio's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"A man who could die."

For the first time, the feared mafia boss had no immediate answer.

Nico looked away.

Because he knew.

Nobody talked to Alessio Marchetti that way.

Nobody saw him as human.

Except her.

A knock interrupted them.

One of Alessio's men entered.

"Boss."

His expression was serious.

"We found something."

Alessio turned.

"What?"

"The Grecos weren't trying to kill you because of the docks."

A pause.

"They were trying to find the girl."

Vivienne felt the room disappear.

"The girl?"

The man looked at her.

"You."

Alessio's expression changed instantly.

Cold.

Controlled.

Dangerous.

"Get everyone downstairs."

Nico straightened.

"Why?"

Alessio looked at Vivienne.

"Because someone just made the biggest mistake of their life."

He moved between her and the door.

Protecting her.

And for the first time, Vivienne understood something terrifying.

May you like

The mafia boss wasn't keeping her because she saved him.

He was keeping her because someone had just declared war over her.
