Chapter 7 - The X That Changed Everything

Six months later, the Cinder Club reopened.
But it was different.
The fear was gone.
The people who worked there no longer looked over their shoulders.
Vivienne stood behind the bar, placing a drink on the counter.
Alessio watched from across the room.
"You still do that."
She looked up.
"Do what?"
"Save people."
She smiled.
"Someone has to."
He walked closer.
"You know the first thing I noticed about you?"
"What?"
"You weren't afraid of me."
Vivienne laughed.
"That's not true."
"No?"
"No."
She looked at him.
"I was terrified."
"Then why did you help me?"
She thought for a moment.
"Because being afraid doesn't mean doing nothing."
Alessio smiled.
A rare, real smile.
Then he placed something on the counter.
A napkin.
Her old napkin.
The one with the X.
She stared.
"You kept it?"
"Every day."
"Why?"
He looked at her.
"Because that was the moment my life changed."
Vivienne became quiet.
The most feared man in New York had kept a small piece of paper.
Not because it saved his life.
Because it introduced him to hers.
Alessio took her hand.
"No more debts."
"No more running."
"No more people deciding your future."
She looked at him.
"What are you saying?"
"I'm saying the woman who saved my life should finally have someone protecting hers."
A year later, Vivienne Marsh was no longer the waitress everyone ignored.
She was the woman beside Alessio Marchetti.
Not because she owed him.
Not because she was afraid.
Because she chose him.
And every person who knew their story understood one thing:
The most powerful man in New York wasn't defeated by an enemy.

He was changed by a woman who wrote one silent X on a napkin.
