Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Behind the Smile

Daniel Cross had worked beside Adrian for twelve years.

He knew every business.

Every secret.

Every weakness.

And now Adrian knew the worst truth.

Daniel knew about Elena.

Which meant Daniel was watching her.

---

Adrian arrived at Murphy’s Diner before opening.

Elena looked surprised.

“You’re early.”

“I need you to leave Chicago for a few days.”

She immediately frowned.

“No.”

“Elena.”

“No.”

“You don’t understand.”

“No, you don’t understand.”

She put down the coffee cup.

“You keep deciding things for me.”

“Because I know what’s coming.”

“And I don’t?”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

Adrian stopped.

Because explaining meant admitting fear.

And Adrian Vale was not afraid of anything.

Except losing her.

“There are people who want to hurt me.”

“I know.”

“They may use you.”

Elena stared.

“And you think sending me away fixes that?”

“Yes.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because running means they win.”

Adrian looked at her.

She continued:

“I spent years surviving things you know nothing about.”

That surprised him.

“You?”

“Yes.”

She smiled sadly.

“I may not have bodyguards. I may not own companies. But I know how to fight.”

For the first time…

Adrian respected her in a way that had nothing to do with attraction.

She was strong.

---

That evening, Daniel Cross finally appeared.

Not with weapons.

Not with threats.

With a smile.

“Adrian.”

The two men stood across from each other.

“You disappointed me.”

Daniel sighed.

“You always were too emotional when it came to certain people.”

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“You used Elena.”

“I used your weakness.”

“She is not my weakness.”

Daniel smiled.

“That’s what makes her dangerous.”

---

The confrontation ended with Daniel exposed.

But before leaving, he delivered one final warning.

“You think you’re protecting her.”

Daniel looked at Adrian.

“But she is the reason you’re vulnerable now.”

---

Adrian returned to Elena’s apartment that night.

She opened the door.

“You look terrible.”

He almost smiled.

Almost.

“I need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Do you trust me?”

Elena studied him.

The man everyone feared.

Standing outside her apartment.

Not as a boss.

Not as a king.

Just a man.

“Yes.”

The answer came quickly.

Adrian looked surprised.

“Why?”

“Because when everyone else saw a monster…”

She smiled softly.

May you like

“I saw someone who needed coffee.”
