Chapter 7 - The Smile Chicago Never Forgot

Six months later, Murphy’s Diner had a new window.
A new sign.
And one very unusual regular customer.
Every morning at exactly eight o’clock…
Adrian Vale sat in booth twelve.
Same seat.
Same coffee.
Same waitress.
Except now Elena wasn’t only a waitress.
She was the woman who ran the diner beside him.
The woman who changed everything.
---
One morning, Elena placed his coffee down.
“Fresh coffee, sir.”
Adrian looked up.
“You still do that.”
“Yes.”
“After all this time?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
She smiled.
“Because you still like it.”
Adrian shook his head.
“You know, most people are afraid to call me that.”
“I know.”
“And you never were.”
Elena leaned against the table.
“That’s because I met the man before I met the legend.”
For a moment, Adrian said nothing.
Then he smiled.
Not a small smile.
Not a rare smile.
A real one.
The entire diner noticed.
Maria nearly dropped a plate.
“Again?”
Elena laughed.
“What?”
Maria pointed at Adrian.
“He’s smiling.”
Adrian looked around.
Then back at Elena.
“I guess I do that now.”
“Why?”
He reached across the table and took her hand.
“Because of you.”
---
Years later, people in Chicago still told stories about Adrian Vale.
They talked about the businessman.
The powerful man.
The legend.
But the people who truly knew him remembered something else.
They remembered the day the most feared man in the city walked into a small diner…
And a broke waitress looked at him like he was just another person.
They remembered that she called him “sir.”
And somehow…
May you like
That was the moment Adrian Vale finally learned how to smile.
