Chapter 6 - The Night He Risked Everything For Her

The call came at 11:47 p.m.
Victor answered immediately.
"Arthur."
The voice on the other side was tense.
"Boss."
Victor sat up.
"What happened?"
A pause.
"We lost contact with Harper."
Everything stopped.
"What?"
"She left her apartment forty minutes ago. Her phone was found nearby."
Victor stood.
"Find her."
"We're already searching."
Victor grabbed his coat.
Arthur hesitated.
"Boss."
"What?"
"This could be a trap."
Victor looked toward the city.
"I know."
"You can't go alone."
Victor's voice became cold.
"Then keep up."
---
The abandoned freight terminal sat on the edge of Chicago.
Rain fell heavily.
The place had been empty for years.
Victor walked inside.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Then he saw her.
Harper.
Standing near an old loading area.
Alive.
Unharmed.
But scared.
"Victor!"
He moved instantly.
But stopped when Daniel Cross stepped forward.
"Interesting."
Daniel smiled.
"The great Victor Gallow."
Victor's eyes turned cold.
"You used her."
Daniel laughed.
"No."
He looked at Harper.
"She was the only thing that made you vulnerable."
Victor stepped forward.
"Let her go."
Daniel shook his head.
"You still don't understand."
He looked at Victor.
"For years, you controlled everyone because nobody mattered to you."
A pause.
"Now someone does."
Harper looked at Victor.
And she understood.
Daniel wasn't trying to hurt her.
He was trying to break him.
---
Victor looked at Harper.
"Are you okay?"
She nodded.
"I'm okay."
Daniel laughed.
"Even now?"
Victor ignored him.
His entire focus was on Harper.
That was exactly what Daniel hated.
"You would destroy everything for her?"
Victor answered without hesitation.
"Yes."
Silence.
Even Daniel looked surprised.
Victor continued.
"The empire."
"My reputation."
"Everything."
He looked at Harper.
"She's worth more."
---
Daniel's plan collapsed because he expected fear.
He expected Victor to choose power.
But he didn't understand something.
Harper had changed him.
Not by controlling him.
Not by demanding anything.
Simply by showing him that he could be more than the man everyone feared.
---
Minutes later, Daniel was taken away.
The police received anonymous evidence.
Victor made sure Daniel would answer for everything.
But he never told anyone who provided the information.
---
Outside the terminal, rain poured down.
Harper stood beside Victor.
"You came for me."
Victor looked at her.
"Of course."
"Even knowing it could be a trap?"
"Yes."
She stared at him.
"Why?"
Victor was quiet.
Then:
"Because losing you was not an option."
Harper's eyes softened.
"You know that's the closest thing to admitting you care."
Victor looked away.
"I know."
A small smile appeared on her face.
"Progress."
For the first time...
Victor smiled.
May you like
Actually smiled.
