Chapter 7 - The Man Who Finally Found Something Worth Protecting

Six months later, Chicago was different.

So was Victor Gallow.

The newspapers still called him one of the most powerful businessmen in the city.

People still respected him.

People still feared him.

But the people closest to him noticed something.

He was no longer alone.

---

Harper stood inside the Gallow Holdings design department, looking at the new office.

She shook her head.

"I still can't believe this."

Victor entered.

"What?"

"You built an entire creative division because I complained that designers weren't respected."

Victor adjusted his suit.

"I invested in talent."

She smiled.

"Sure."

A pause.

"You invested in my idea."

Victor didn't deny it.

Because he had learned something important.

Power wasn't just about control.

Sometimes power was giving someone else the chance to shine.

---

That evening, Victor took Harper back to the elevator where everything started.

The same private elevator.

The same building.

The same place where a wet sneaker changed his entire life.

Harper looked around.

"Why are we here?"

Victor pressed the button.

"Remember this?"

She smiled.

"The day I almost got thrown out by your security guard?"

Arthur, standing nearby, sighed.

"You almost gave me a heart attack."

Harper laughed.

Victor watched her.

That sound.

He loved that sound.

And finally, he admitted it.

---

When the elevator stopped, Victor reached into his pocket.

Harper looked surprised.

"Victor."

He held a small box.

For once, the most feared man in Chicago looked nervous.

Not because of enemies.

Not because of danger.

Because one woman's answer mattered more than anything.

"Harper Davis."

She covered her mouth.

"I spent my entire life believing attachment was weakness."

He opened the box.

"But you proved me wrong."

His voice softened.

"You walked into my world without fear."

A pause.

"And somehow made me want a future I never thought I deserved."

Harper's eyes filled with tears.

"Victor..."

"Will you stay?"

She smiled.

"That was your proposal?"

"It was honest."

She laughed.

"You're impossible."

"Yes."

A pause.

"But?"

Harper looked at him.

"Yes."

---

One year later, Chicago watched the most unexpected wedding of the decade.

The feared businessman.

The woman who stopped his elevator.

Everyone expected Harper to change Victor.

But they were wrong.

She didn't change him.

She simply reminded him who he had always been beneath the armor.

A man capable of loyalty.

A man capable of kindness.

A man capable of love.

Years earlier, Victor Gallow believed the only thing that kept him alive was having nothing to lose.

Then a woman with a broken umbrella and a terrible cup of coffee walked into his elevator.

And taught him the truth.

The most powerful person in the room...

Wasn't the one everyone feared.

May you like

It was the one who finally had something worth protecting.
