Chapter 6 - The Choice That Changed the Empire

I reached the hospital before they took Clara upstairs.
She looked terrified.
“Adrian.”
I took her hand.
“I’m here.”
“The bleeding started again.”
“I know.”
“What if—”
“No.”
“Listen to me.”
“I am listening.”
“If something happens—”
“Nothing is happening.”
She gave me a tired look.
“You’re terrible at comforting people.”
“I’m learning.”
“Slowly.”
The surgeon approached.
“We need to go.”
Clara tightened her grip.
“Adrian.”
“Yes?”
“Whatever happens, don’t go backward.”
I knew exactly what she meant.
The organization.
The violence.
The man I had been before her.
“I won’t.”
“Promise.”
“I promise.”
They wheeled her away.
I spent four hours sitting beneath fluorescent lights.
Vincent arrived around dawn.
“How is she?”
“In surgery.”
He sat beside me.
Neither of us spoke for several minutes.
Then he handed me a folder.
“What’s this?”
“Everything you asked for.”
I opened it.
Ports.
Casinos.
Nightclubs.
Private security.
Lending operations.
Shell corporations.
Twenty years of power built through fear, favors, and silence.
Vincent watched me.
“What are you thinking?”
“That Clara nearly died because everyone around me believes power is something you use against weaker people.”
“Walter Bennett isn’t you.”
“No.”
I closed the folder.
“But parts of my empire were built by men who think exactly like him.”
Vincent understood.
“You want out.”
“I want clean.”
“That could take years.”
“Then start today.”
“What stays?”
“Shipping. Hotels. licensed casinos. security. real estate. entertainment.”
“And everything else?”
“Shut it down or sell whatever can legally be sold.”
Vincent stared at me.
“You know what people will say.”
“That Adrian Moretti became weak?”
“Yes.”
I looked toward the operating-room doors.
“Let them.”
Vincent smiled slightly.
“That might actually scare them more.”
The doors finally opened.
The surgeon walked toward me.
I stood.
“How is she?”
“She made it through.”
My knees almost gave out.
“The bleeding is controlled. Recovery will be difficult, but I expect her to recover.”
I closed my eyes.
“Can I see her?”
“Soon.”
Three hours later, Clara woke.
I was sitting beside her.
“You look terrible,” she whispered.
“I’ve been told I’m handsome.”
“People lie to rich men.”
I laughed quietly.
Then she noticed the folder beside me.
“What’s that?”
“Our future.”
“That sounds ominous.”
“I’m restructuring everything.”
Her expression changed.
“Because of me?”
“Because of us.”
“What does that mean?”
“No illegal lending. No coercive businesses. No arrangements that depend on fear.”
“Adrian…”
“I should have done it years ago.”
She stared at me.
“You’d really walk away from that much power?”
I shook my head.
“I’m finally learning what power is for.”
She reached toward me.
I took her hand.
“What happens now?” she asked.
“We heal.”
“And my father?”
“He faces trial.”
“My brothers?”
“The evidence will determine what happens.”
“Evan?”
“Free.”
She smiled faintly.
“Good.”
Then tears filled her eyes.
“Our baby.”
I moved closer.
“I know.”
“We never even named him.”
“Yes, we did.”
She looked at me.
I swallowed.
“You told me months ago that if we had a boy, you liked Gabriel.”
Her lips trembled.
“You remembered?”
“I remember everything you say.”
“That’s terrifying.”
“Occupational hazard.”
She squeezed my hand.
“Gabriel Moretti.”
I nodded.
“Gabriel Moretti.”
We sat quietly.
There would be no revenge that could bring him back.
No empire large enough to purchase the future we had lost.

But Clara was alive.
And for the first time in my adult life, I wanted to build something instead of control it.
