Chapter 2 - The Stranger Who Answered Her Cry for Help

Tyler looked at Harper.

The fear in his eyes was different now.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear of being discovered.

"Did you call someone?"

Harper shook her head.

"No."

Tyler stepped closer.

"Who did you call?"

"I didn't."

The knock came again.

Three slow, controlled knocks.

Not desperate.

Not rushed.

Whoever stood outside wasn't asking.

They were announcing themselves.

Tyler walked toward the door.

"Stay quiet."

Harper watched him.

For the first time, she saw something she had never seen before.

Tyler was afraid.

He looked through the peephole.

His face changed.

"Who is it?"

Silence.

Then a deep voice answered.

"Gideon Lockach."

Tyler frowned.

"I don't know anyone named Gideon."

The voice outside remained calm.

"You don't need to."

A second later—

The door opened.

Not gently.

Not violently.

Just enough.

A large man in a dark suit stepped inside.

Tyler immediately moved backward.

The stranger's presence filled the apartment.

He wasn't shouting.

He wasn't threatening.

He didn't need to.

His silence was enough.

Behind him stood another man.

Bigger.

Stronger.

Watching everything.

The man in front looked around the apartment.

The broken glass.

The blood.

Then Harper.

His expression changed slightly.

Not sympathy.

Something colder.

Recognition.

"You are Harper Lane."

She swallowed.

"Who are you?"

The man reached into his pocket.

Slowly.

Harper tensed.

But he only removed his phone.

The same phone number.

The same device.

"I believe you were texting me."

Her eyes widened.

"You?"

"Gideon Lockach."

Tyler laughed nervously.

"Listen, whatever this is, it's none of your business."

Gideon's eyes moved toward him.

The room became silent.

Then Gideon spoke.

"She said you broke her leg."

Tyler immediately shook his head.

"That's not what happened."

Gideon looked at him.

"Interesting."

"What?"

"You answered before I accused you."

Tyler froze.

Gideon walked closer.

"You prepared your excuse before anyone asked."

Tyler's face changed.

"You think you know everything?"

"No."

Gideon glanced at Harper.

"I know enough."

Tyler stepped forward.

"You can't just walk into my apartment."

Gideon ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Harper.

"Can you tell me what happened?"

Harper hesitated.

For months, she had protected Tyler.

Covered for him.

Made excuses.

But now...

She looked at Gideon.

A stranger.

A dangerous-looking stranger.

Yet somehow, she felt safer telling him the truth than she had felt in her own home.

"He got angry."

Her voice cracked.

"He grabbed me."

Gideon's jaw tightened.

"He pushed me."

Tyler interrupted.

"She's lying."

Gideon looked at him.

"Be quiet."

Two words.

Nothing more.

But Tyler stopped speaking.

Harper noticed.

Everyone listened to Gideon.

She didn't understand why.

Who was this man?

Why did Tyler suddenly look terrified?

Gideon turned toward the second man.

"Samson."

The large man nodded.

"Yes, sir."

"Make sure he doesn't leave."

Tyler stepped back.

"Wait."

For the first time, panic appeared clearly on his face.

"Who are you?"

Gideon looked at him.

A cold expression crossed his face.

"The man who answered her message."

Then he looked toward Harper.

"My medical team is outside."

Harper stared.

"Medical team?"

"You need a hospital."

Her eyes filled with tears.

Not from pain.

From the realization that someone had actually come.

Someone had believed her.

Gideon lowered his voice.

"You are leaving this apartment tonight."

Harper looked at him.

"Why are you helping me?"

For a moment, Gideon said nothing.

Then:

"Because someone should have helped you sooner."

The words hit harder than she expected.

A few minutes later, a doctor entered with a medical bag.

Harper watched Gideon step aside.

He didn't act like a hero.

He didn't ask for thanks.

He simply stood there.

Watching.

Protecting.

And for the first time in years...

Harper felt like she wasn't alone.

But she didn't know yet that the stranger who answered her desperate message was not just a wealthy businessman.

He was Gideon Lockach.

A name whispered throughout the city.

A man feared by criminals.

A man powerful enough to make enemies disappear.

May you like

And somehow...

He had chosen to answer her.
