Chapter 6 - The Mafia Boss Who Learned to Protect

Harper couldn't sleep.

The words Gideon had spoken kept repeating in her mind.

Your father's death wasn't an accident.

For years, she had accepted the official story.

A car crash.

A rainy night.

A tragic mistake.

Everyone told her the same thing.

"Sometimes life is unfair."

But nobody ever told her why her father's company disappeared afterward.

Nobody explained why their house was sold within months.

Nobody explained why Tyler suddenly appeared in her life offering comfort when she was at her weakest.

She had thought Tyler saved her.

Now she wondered if he had been placed there.

The thought made her sick.

A quiet knock interrupted her thoughts.

Harper looked toward the door.

"Come in."

Gideon stepped inside.

He wasn't wearing his usual suit.

Tonight, he wore a simple black shirt with the sleeves rolled slightly up.

For the first time, Harper noticed the small details.

The scars on his hands.

The tiredness hidden behind his controlled expression.

He wasn't just a powerful man.

He was someone who had survived things too.

"You should sleep," Gideon said.

Harper looked at him.

"That's your advice?"

"It's a good one."

She gave a small, humorless laugh.

"Coming from the man who probably works twenty hours a day?"

Gideon didn't answer.

That was enough of an answer.

Harper looked away.

"My whole life was a lie."

"No."

She looked back.

"What?"

"Your whole life wasn't a lie."

Gideon walked closer.

"Someone lied to you. That's different."

Harper was quiet.

"How do you know the difference?"

"Because the truth of someone's life isn't controlled by the people who hurt them."

The words stayed with her.

Then she asked:

"Why are you really helping me, Gideon?"

He looked at her.

"I already answered."

"No."

Harper shook her head.

"You gave me the simple answer."

She studied him.

"But not the real one."

For a moment, Gideon said nothing.

Then he walked toward the window.

"When I was younger, I watched someone stay silent because they were afraid."

Harper listened.

"Everyone around her knew something was wrong."

His voice became quieter.

"But nobody stepped in."

"Who was she?"

Gideon looked outside.

"My mother."

The answer surprised Harper.

"She was hurt?"

"Yes."

"By someone?"

"Someone who believed power meant he could do whatever he wanted."

Harper understood immediately.

Gideon turned back.

"I was too young to stop it."

His eyes hardened.

"But I promised myself I would never watch that happen again."

Harper looked at him differently.

The cold mafia boss everyone feared suddenly made sense.

His anger wasn't about control.

It was about helplessness.

A notification came from Gideon's phone.

He checked it.

His expression changed.

"What happened?"

"Tyler escaped."

Harper immediately became tense.

"How?"

"Someone helped him."

"Is he coming here?"

Gideon looked at her.

"No."

The confidence in his voice was absolute.

"But he knows something."

"What?"

"That you are the key to exposing people who have been hiding for years."

Harper frowned.

"Why me?"

Gideon hesitated.

Then:

"Because your father trusted someone."

"Who?"

Gideon looked at the file on the table.

"Me."

The room went silent.

Harper stared.

"You knew my father?"

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because I needed proof."

"How long have you known who I was?"

Gideon didn't avoid the question.

"Since the night you texted me."

Harper felt hurt.

"You knew?"

"I recognized your name."

"And you still let me believe you were just a stranger?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Gideon's expression changed.

"Because that night you didn't need a powerful man."

He paused.

"You needed someone who would believe you."

Harper didn't know what to say.

Because somehow...

That hurt more than any lie.

A powerful man had entered her life.

But the thing she needed most was simple.

Someone who listened.

---

The next morning, Gideon brought Harper to a private meeting room.

Several documents were spread across the table.

Samson stood nearby.

"Tyler's employer was connected to your father's company before it collapsed."

Harper looked at the papers.

"My father was investigating them?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Gideon pointed to a document.

"Financial fraud."

Harper read the page.

Her eyes widened.

"My father found this?"

"Yes."

"And they killed him?"

Gideon's silence answered.

Harper stepped back.

"Why didn't anyone tell me?"

"Because they thought you were easier to control if you knew nothing."

Her hands tightened.

"Tyler knew."

"Yes."

"He knew everything?"

"Not everything."

Gideon looked at Samson.

"Bring him."

Harper looked shocked.

"You're bringing Tyler here?"

"He has information."

"Is that safe?"

Gideon looked at her.

"Harper."

"What?"

"You need to understand something."

He stepped closer.

"I can be dangerous."

His voice was calm.

"But I am dangerous to people who deserve it."

A few hours later, Tyler was brought into the room.

He looked different.

The confidence was gone.

The arrogance disappeared.

When he saw Harper beside Gideon, fear crossed his face.

"Harper..."

She looked at him.

For the first time, she didn't look afraid.

She looked disappointed.

"You lied to me."

Tyler swallowed.

"I can explain."

"No."

Her voice surprised even herself.

"You can't."

Tyler looked at Gideon.

"You don't understand what you're involved in."

Gideon remained silent.

Tyler continued.

"They will kill you."

Harper frowned.

"Who?"

Tyler looked at Gideon.

"The people your father discovered."

Silence.

Then Gideon asked:

"Names."

Tyler shook his head.

"I don't know."

"You know enough."

Tyler looked terrified.

"They told me to watch her."

Harper froze.

"Watch me?"

Tyler lowered his eyes.

"Make sure she never found your father's files."

The room went completely silent.

Harper felt like the air disappeared.

"You were never sorry."

Tyler looked at her.

"Harper..."

"You were assigned to me."

He couldn't answer.

That was the truth.

Gideon watched her carefully.

Because he knew this moment could break her.

But Harper surprised him.

She straightened her shoulders.

"No more."

Tyler looked at her.

"What?"

"No more excuses."

Her voice was steady.

"You don't get to hurt me and then ask me to understand why."

For the first time, Gideon saw something different in her.

Not a victim.

May you like

A survivor.
