Chapter 3 - Gideon Lockach — The Man Everyone Feared

Harper woke up to the sound of rain.
For several seconds, she didn't know where she was.
The ceiling above her was white.
The room was warm.
The sheets were soft.
And there was no smell of old grease, cheap cleaner, or fear.
Then everything came rushing back.
Tyler.
The apartment.
The pain.
The stranger.
"Gideon..."
She whispered his name before she even realized it.
A woman sitting beside the window looked up from a tablet.
"You're awake."
Harper immediately tensed.
"Who are you?"
The woman smiled gently.
"I'm Dr. Miller's assistant. My name is Claire. You're at Lockach Medical Residence."
Harper frowned.
"Medical residence?"
Claire hesitated.
"It's one of Mr. Lockach's private facilities."
That answer created more questions.
"Why am I here?"
Before Claire could respond, the door opened.
Gideon Lockach walked inside.
No bodyguards.
No dramatic entrance.
Just the same calm expression.
Dark suit.
Controlled movements.
The kind of presence that made everyone else in the room seem quieter.
Harper watched him carefully.
"You brought me here."
Gideon nodded.
"You needed treatment."
"You could have taken me to a normal hospital."
"I could have."
"Then why didn't you?"
Gideon pulled a chair across from the bed and sat down.
"Because normal hospitals have waiting rooms. Paperwork. Questions."
His eyes met hers.
"You needed protection first."
Harper looked away.
"Protection from Tyler?"
"Among other things."
The answer bothered her.
"What does that mean?"
Gideon didn't respond immediately.
Instead, he placed a folder on the table.
Harper looked at it.
"What is that?"
"Information."
"About Tyler?"
"Yes."
Her expression changed.
"Why would you investigate him?"
Gideon's face remained unreadable.
"Because men like him rarely stop after one person."
Harper was silent.
The thought terrified her.
"What did you find?"
Gideon opened the folder.
"Multiple complaints."
Harper stared.
"But no arrests."
"No."
"Why?"
"Because he was careful."
The room went quiet.
Harper looked down at her hands.
She felt something she hadn't expected.
Anger.
Not only toward Tyler.
Toward herself.
"I should have left sooner."
Gideon's eyes moved toward her.
"Don't do that."
She looked up.
"What?"
"Blame yourself."
Harper swallowed.
"You don't know me."
"No."
Gideon leaned back.
"But I know enough."
His voice softened slightly.
"People like Tyler don't begin by showing you who they are."
Harper looked at him.
"They show you who they want you to believe they are."
For a moment, neither spoke.
Then Harper asked:
"Who are you really?"
Gideon looked toward the window.
Outside, the city moved beneath the gray sky.
"A businessman."
She almost laughed.
"That's not the whole answer."
"No."
"Then what is the whole answer?"
Gideon turned back.
"My name carries weight."
"Meaning?"
"Meaning there are people who respect me."
"And people who fear you."
Silence.
That silence was her answer.
Harper studied him.
The expensive suit.
The calm voice.
The men who followed him.
The way Tyler had frozen the moment Gideon entered.
"You are dangerous."
Gideon didn't deny it.
"Yes."
The honesty surprised her.
"But not to you."
Harper looked away.
"How do I know that?"
Gideon answered immediately.
"Because if I wanted something from you, I wouldn't have waited until you were safe enough to ask."
The words stayed with her.
For years, every man around her had taken.
Tyler took her confidence.
Her freedom.
Her voice.
But Gideon...
He had given her something.
A choice.
The door opened.
Samson entered.
"Mr. Lockach."
Gideon looked at him.
"Speak."
"Tyler Bennett is asking for a lawyer."
Harper's body stiffened.
"He knows where I am?"
"No," Gideon replied.
"Then how..."
Gideon looked at Samson.
"Explain."
Samson glanced at Harper before speaking.
"Tyler contacted someone. He says he has friends who can make problems disappear."
Gideon's expression changed.
Only slightly.
But Harper noticed.
The temperature in the room seemed to drop.
"Who?"
Samson gave a name.
Gideon stood.
"Interesting."
Harper looked concerned.
"What?"
Gideon adjusted his jacket.
"Tyler wasn't acting alone."
Her heart sank.
"What does that mean?"
Gideon looked at her.
May you like
"It means the man who hurt you may be only the beginning."
