Chapter 4 - The Woman He Refused to Abandon

Three days later, Harper sat in a wheelchair overlooking the city.

Her leg was healing.

Her body was recovering.

But her mind was still trapped in that apartment.

Every sound reminded her of Tyler.

Every closed door made her nervous.

Every unfamiliar voice made her tense.

Gideon noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He noticed everything.

"You haven't slept."

Harper looked up.

Gideon stood near the doorway.

"You always appear without making noise?"

"Usually."

She almost smiled.

Almost.

"You know, most people would introduce themselves before becoming involved in someone's life."

Gideon walked closer.

"Most people wouldn't answer a random message at two in the morning."

That made her quiet.

After a moment, she said:

"Why did you answer?"

Gideon looked at her.

"I almost didn't."

Harper raised an eyebrow.

"Really?"

"I receive many messages."

"From strangers saying their boyfriend broke their leg?"

"No."

A small silence.

"From people asking for things."

Harper looked down.

"But you answered mine."

"Yes."

"Why?"

Gideon took a breath.

"Because your message didn't sound like someone asking for attention."

His voice became quieter.

"It sounded like someone who had already given up."

Those words hurt because they were true.

Harper looked away.

"I was embarrassed."

"Why?"

"Because I stayed."

Gideon frowned.

"You survived."

"That's not the same thing."

"No."

He stepped closer.

"But it matters more."

Harper looked at him.

"You always talk like you know everything."

"I know some things."

"Like what?"

Gideon looked toward the window.

"I know fear makes people stay."

The answer surprised her.

"How?"

For the first time, something changed in Gideon's expression.

A memory.

Something painful.

"Because I have seen what fear does to people."

Harper realized there was a story behind his eyes.

A story he wasn't telling.

Before she could ask, his phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"Yes."

A pause.

His expression became colder.

"Send me everything."

He ended the call.

Harper noticed.

"Problem?"

"Tyler has been released."

Her face changed.

"What?"

"He had someone pay his legal fees."

"Can he come after me?"

Gideon didn't hesitate.

"No."

The confidence in his voice was almost frightening.

"How can you promise that?"

"Because he won't get close to you."

Harper stared.

"You sound very certain."

"I am."

"Why?"

Gideon looked directly at her.

"Because nobody hurts someone under my protection."

The sentence should have scared her.

Instead...

It made her feel safe.

And that frightened her more.

Later that night, Harper couldn't sleep.

She rolled toward the window.

The city lights reflected against the glass.

Then she noticed Gideon standing outside the room.

Not inside.

Not watching her like she was helpless.

Just standing there.

Guarding the hallway.

She opened the door slightly.

"You don't have to stay."

Gideon turned.

"I know."

"Then why are you?"

A pause.

"Because I want to."

Harper studied him.

"Nobody does things for free."

Gideon looked at her.

"I didn't say it was free."

Her expression changed.

"What do you want?"

For a moment, Gideon said nothing.

Then:

"Nothing."

That answer confused her.

"That doesn't make sense."

"It doesn't have to."

And for the first time since the night she sent that accidental message...

Harper felt something unfamiliar.

May you like

Peace.
