Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

Victor Hale wasn't at the warehouse.

That was the first sign something was wrong.

The second was the man waiting inside.

Adrian stopped.

“Dale?”

Marin's former diner manager stood beneath the warehouse lights.

He looked terrified.

Luca swore quietly.

Dale raised both hands.

“I didn't know what they were planning.”

Adrian approached him.

“Start talking.”

Dale swallowed.

“A guy started coming into the diner three months ago. Asked questions.”

“About me?”

“About Marin.”

Adrian went still.

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

Luca grabbed Dale's jacket.

“You better find a better answer.”

“I swear!”

Adrian lifted one hand.

Luca released him.

Dale continued.

“He wanted to know who worked late, who parked nearby, who saw people coming through the neighborhood.”

Adrian understood.

“The alley.”

Dale nodded.

“They were planning something there.”

The attack hadn't been random.

Marin hadn't accidentally wandered into it.

Victor had chosen the alley because the surrounding businesses closed early.

But Earl's Diner had changed Marin's shift that night.

She had become the witness no one planned for.

Adrian's phone rang.

Marin.

He answered immediately.

“Are you okay?”

Her voice came low and frightened.

“Adrian, there's someone inside the house.”

His blood went cold.

“Where's Ivy?”

“With me.”

“Lock the door.”

“We're in the bathroom.”

“Do not come out.”

He turned to Luca.

“House. Now.”

They ran.

---

Marin held Ivy against her chest.

Footsteps moved through the hallway outside.

Ivy whispered, “Mom.”

“Quiet, baby.”

The bathroom handle moved.

Marin covered Ivy's mouth.

The lock held.

A man's voice came through the door.

“Marin.”

She recognized it.

Not Victor.

One of Adrian's household security men.

“Ms. Cole, Adrian sent me.”

Marin didn't move.

Then her phone vibrated.

Adrian.

She answered silently.

“Marin?”

She whispered, “Someone says you sent him.”

“I didn't.”

Her stomach dropped.

The handle moved again.

“Open the door, Ms. Cole.”

Adrian's voice came through the phone.

“Stay where you are.”

A crash sounded downstairs.

Then shouting.

The man outside suddenly ran.

Ivy buried her face against Marin.

Minutes felt like hours.

Then came three knocks.

“Marin.”

Adrian.

She opened the door.

He stood there breathing hard, rain on his coat.

Marin stepped forward and hit his chest.

“You said this house was safe!”

“I know.”

“You said—”

“I know.”

She hit him again.

Then grabbed his coat.

Adrian didn't stop her.

“I'm sorry.”

Ivy ran into him.

That surprised everyone.

Adrian crouched and held her.

“It's okay.”

“No, it's not!” Ivy cried.

“No,” he said quietly. “It's not.”

He looked at Marin over Ivy's head.

“But it will be.”

---

The traitor was Adrian's own security chief.

He had worked for Victor for six years.

By morning, Luca had recovered enough records to prove everything.

The attack.

The stolen company money.

The false accounts.

The attempt to frame Adrian.

Victor had expected Adrian to die in the alley.

Marin had ruined the entire plan simply by stopping.

Adrian stood in his study while Luca spread documents across the desk.

“This puts Hale away,” Luca said.

“Legally?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at him.

Luca sighed.

“Yes, Adrian. Legally.”

“Good.”

Marin stood near the doorway.

“You're turning him in?”

Adrian looked at her.

“What did you expect?”

She hesitated.

“The man I found in the alley?”

“Yes.”

“I wasn't sure.”

“And now?”

Marin looked toward the hallway where Ivy was drawing.

“Now I think you're trying very hard not to become the man everyone expects.”

Adrian said nothing.

“That matters,” Marin added.

His eyes remained on hers.

“Stay.”

The word came quietly.

Marin's breath caught.

“For how long?”

Adrian glanced toward Ivy.

Then back at her.

“I don't know.”

“That sounds dangerous.”

“It probably is.”

She smiled faintly.

“You really need better sales pitches.”

“I've never had to ask anyone to stay before.”

Marin's smile disappeared.

That sounded painfully true.

Before she could answer, Luca entered.

“We found Hale.”

Adrian straightened.

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“Leaving?”

“Trying.”

Adrian picked up his phone.

“Send everything to the authorities.”

Luca blinked.

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

“Some of those records will create problems for us.”

“I know.”

Luca stared at him.

Then understood.

Adrian was choosing.

Not revenge.

Not the old rules.

A future.

“Do it,” Adrian said.

Luca nodded.

May you like

And for the first time in years, Adrian Moretti allowed the law to finish a war his family would once have settled in blood.
