Chapter 2 - The Daughter He Never Knew Existed

“I never abandoned you.”

Sofia stared at Adrian across the tiny apartment.

“You sent me a letter.”

“What letter?”

“The one saying your father was right about me.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You said I was an embarrassment. You told me to take the money and disappear.”

“No.”

“You said people like me didn’t belong in your world.”

“Sofia, I never wrote that.”

Claire stepped forward.

“That’s enough.”

Adrian looked at her.

There was something about Claire’s face he couldn’t place.

Something familiar.

Sofia opened an old cabinet and removed a green metal box.

Inside were photographs, letters, a faded bakery receipt—

and an envelope.

She handed it to Adrian.

He unfolded the letter.

His face drained of color.

The handwriting resembled his.

The signature resembled his.

But he had never written those words.

“This is forged.”

“I know that now,” Sofia said.

“Who gave it to you?”

“Your father’s attorney.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

“Charles Crowe?”

Sofia nodded.

Vanessa’s father.

The man who had controlled Blackwood family legal affairs for decades.

Adrian looked toward the door.

Vanessa Crowe was waiting in Manhattan for him to sign the largest acquisition of his career.

“What happened after I left?”

Sofia glanced at Claire.

Claire immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“He deserves to know,” Sofia said.

“He deserved to know thirty years ago.”

Adrian’s attention shifted between them.

Claire was thirty-one.

He had left Sofia thirty-two years earlier.

A horrible possibility formed.

“Sofia…”

Her eyes filled.

“I found out I was pregnant eleven days after you left.”

Silence.

Adrian looked at Claire.

“No.”

Claire folded her arms.

“Don’t.”

“You’re my—”

“Biologically?”

Claire’s voice was cold.

“Probably.”

Noah looked at his mother.

Then Sofia.

Then Adrian.

“Wait.”

He pointed at Adrian.

“Does that mean you’re my grandfather?”

The question shattered whatever control Adrian had left.

He dropped to one knee in front of Noah.

“It means…”

His voice failed.

He tried again.

“It means somebody stole thirty-one years from us.”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“Don’t make yourself the only victim.”

Adrian looked up.

“I’m not.”

“You became one of the richest men in America. Mom raised me alone.”

“I didn’t know.”

“You should have.”

“How?”

“By looking harder.”

That landed.

Adrian had no answer.

Noah broke the silence.

“But you remembered Grandma’s donut.”

Adrian looked at him.

“Yes.”

“After thirty-two years?”

“Yes.”

Noah considered that.

“So you didn’t forget everything.”

A broken laugh escaped Sofia.

Then her face changed.

She pressed a hand against her chest.

“Grandma?”

Sofia staggered.

Claire lunged forward.

Adrian caught Sofia before she struck the floor.

“Call 911!”

“She doesn’t have insurance!” Claire shouted.

Adrian looked at her.

“I didn’t ask what it costs.”

As Noah grabbed the phone, an envelope slid beneath the apartment door.

Claire picked it up.

Her face went pale.

“What?”

She handed it to Adrian.

FINAL EVICTION AUTHORIZATION.

Residents had until nine the next morning.

At the bottom was a digital signature.

VANESSA CROWE

CHIEF LEGAL OFFICER

BLACKWOOD HOLDINGS

Adrian stared at it.

Vanessa knew this address.

She had reviewed this building.

Which meant there was a chance she knew Sofia lived here.

And if she knew Sofia…

perhaps she knew Claire existed too.

The acquisition waiting on Adrian’s signature suddenly looked very different.

Sofia was rushed into emergency surgery.

Doctors found a severe coronary blockage.

Claire stood beside a hospital window while Adrian waited across the room.

“You can’t fix thirty years with money.”

“I know.”

“Do you?”

She turned.

“You didn’t watch her work sixteen-hour shifts.”

Adrian lowered his eyes.

“You didn’t see her skip meals so I could eat.”

“I know.”

“No. You don’t.”

Claire’s eyes filled.

“You weren’t there when I asked why I didn’t have a father.”

“I thought she was dead.”

“And that was enough?”

“My father gave me a death certificate. Police records. Photographs.”

“But eventually you stopped looking.”

Adrian said nothing.

“You got to mourn her,” Claire whispered. “She had to survive you.”

He absorbed the accusation without defending himself.

Finally, he said, “I believed the version of the story that allowed me to keep living.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“And she lived the version that gave her no choice.”

Hours later, Sofia survived surgery.

Noah fell asleep against Adrian’s shoulder in the waiting room.

At 2:17 a.m., Adrian called Vanessa.

She answered immediately.

“Where are you?”

“Did you know Sofia Bellini lived in one of our properties?”

Silence.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

“Her name appeared during tenant review.”

“When?”

“Several months ago.”

“And Claire Bennett?”

Another pause.

“You saw her date of birth.”

“Adrian—”

“You saw Florence listed as her birthplace.”

“There was no proof.”

“So you accelerated their eviction?”

“I was protecting the company.”

Adrian looked at his sleeping grandson.

“No.”

May you like

His voice became dangerously quiet.

“You were protecting a lie.”
