Chapter 6 - Captain Red’s Last Mission

The operation lasted forty-three minutes.

Roman hated every second.

He paced.

Sat.

Stood.

Checked his phone.

Noah eventually came downstairs.

“Why are you walking funny?”

Roman stopped.

“I’m worried.”

“About Uncle Marco?”

Roman blinked.

“Who told you?”

“Mom.”

Noah climbed onto a chair.

“Is he scared?”

“Probably.”

“Do brave people get scared?”

Roman sat across from him.

“Yes.”

“All the time?”

“Yes.”

Noah nodded.

“Then you can be scared too.”

Roman looked at him.

“Thank you.”

Noah opened his backpack.

He pulled out Captain Red.

Roman smiled faintly.

“I thought he was retired.”

“No.”

Noah slid the plane across the table.

“He has one more mission.”

“What mission?”

“Bring Uncle Marco home.”

Roman’s throat tightened.

He took the toy.

Thirty minutes later, the front door opened.

Marco entered with two agents.

Bruised.

Tired.

Alive.

Noah jumped down.

“Uncle Marco!”

Marco blinked.

“Uncle?”

Roman smirked.

“Congratulations.”

Noah hugged Marco.

Then pointed at Captain Red.

“He saved you.”

Marco looked at Roman.

Roman nodded seriously.

“He was instrumental.”

Marco laughed.

It was the first time Nora had heard anyone laugh that night.

An agent approached Roman.

“Salvatore is in custody.”

Roman nodded.

“And Vittorio?”

“Picked up in New York.”

Roman exhaled.

Years of tension seemed to leave his shoulders at once.

Nora stood beside him.

“It’s over?”

“No.”

She looked at him.

Roman smiled faintly.

“But the dangerous part is.”

Nora glanced toward Noah.

“And us?”

Roman looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

For once, the man who always had an answer admitted he didn’t.

Nora respected that.

“Good.”

Roman frowned.

“Good?”

“We’ll figure it out without you controlling the ending.”

May you like

Roman laughed.

“Fair.”
