One week later, Elena discovered something impossible.
Her apartment building was no longer owned by the company she rented from.
It belonged to Marcus.
She stared at the document.
"You bought my building?"
Marcus sat across from her.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Security."
She looked at him.
"You bought an entire building for security?"
"Yes."
"That is insane."
"It was necessary."
Elena stood.
"You cannot just buy people's lives because you think you know better."
Marcus looked up.
"I bought the building because someone was using it to watch you."
She stopped.
"What?"
"Three apartments were compromised."
Silence.
Marcus continued.
"The parking garage cameras were disabled."
"The management company was working with them."
"Your neighbors were never the problem."
Elena slowly sat back down.
For once…
she had no argument.
Marcus pushed a folder toward her.
"Everyone who worked against you has been removed."
She opened it.
"You did all this?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Marcus looked at her.
"Because when you walked into my apartment wearing bunny slippers..."
A pause.
"You reminded me that not everyone sees me as a monster."
Elena looked away.
