Chapter 6 - The Betrayal That Nearly Destroyed Them

The first thing Elena noticed was that Marcus Vale looked afraid.
Not nervous.
Not angry.
Afraid.
And that terrified her more than anything else.
Because Marcus was the kind of man who could walk into a room full of enemies and make everyone else feel uncomfortable.
He never hesitated.
Never raised his voice.
Never showed weakness.
But now he was standing in front of her with a phone in his hand, his expression colder than she had ever seen.
"Marcus."
He looked at his security team.
"Seal the building."
Every person moved immediately.
Elena watched as guards rushed toward the elevators and entrances.
She looked back at him.
"What happened?"
Marcus didn't answer.
"Marcus."
His eyes finally met hers.
"Someone inside my organization gave them information."
A chill ran through her.
"Someone who works for you?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
"I don't know yet."
Elena stared.
"You don't know?"
"No."
She almost laughed.
The situation was too unbelievable.
"The man who knows everything doesn't know who betrayed him?"
Marcus's jaw tightened.
"Trust is different from information."
He walked toward the window.
"My enemies couldn't find you because nobody knew where you were."
He turned back.
"Someone changed that."
Elena looked down.
"So someone close to you put me in danger."
Marcus didn't deny it.
That was the answer.
---
Two hours later, the penthouse had become a fortress.
Security cameras.
Locked doors.
Guards everywhere.
Elena hated it.
She hated feeling trapped.
She hated feeling like her life belonged to someone else's war.
She found Marcus in his office.
He was looking through documents.
"You need to stop."
He didn't look up.
"Stop what?"
"Trying to solve everything alone."
Marcus continued reading.
"I handle problems."
"That's not what I said."
She walked closer.
"You think protecting people means carrying everything yourself."
Silence.
"It doesn't."
Marcus finally looked at her.
"You don't understand the world I live in."
"You're right."
Elena nodded.
"I don't."
Then she pointed toward the documents.
"But I understand people."
Marcus said nothing.
"You think everyone around you follows you because they respect you."
A pause.
"Some do."
"But some follow you because they're afraid."
That hit harder than she expected.
Marcus looked away.
Because she was right.
---
The betrayal came from someone Marcus trusted for twelve years.
Daniel Cross.
His second-in-command.
The man who knew every business move.
Every security detail.
Every weakness.
When Daniel entered the penthouse, Elena immediately knew.
Marcus trusted him.
That alone made him dangerous.
Daniel looked at Marcus.
"You're becoming careless."
Marcus's expression changed.
"Careful."
Daniel smiled slightly.
"There it is."
Elena stood nearby.
Watching.
"What does that mean?"
Daniel looked at her.
"The famous Marcus Vale."
A pause.
"The man who never cared about anyone."
His eyes moved back to Marcus.
"Until her."
Marcus stepped forward.
"Choose your next words carefully."
Daniel laughed quietly.
"You don't see it, do you?"
"What?"
"You've changed."
Silence.
"You bought a building."
Daniel looked at Elena.
"You protected a woman."
"You apologized."
A faint smile.
"You even started sleeping."
Elena looked at Marcus.
Because that last part was true.
Daniel continued.
"You built an empire by believing attachment was weakness."
He shook his head.
"And then she walked upstairs wearing bunny slippers and destroyed everything."
Nobody spoke.
Marcus's face was unreadable.
But Elena understood.
This wasn't just betrayal.
This was personal.
---
Daniel was removed.
The danger was over.
At least, that was what everyone believed.
But Marcus wasn't celebrating.
Elena found him outside on the balcony.
"You won."
"No."
She frowned.
"What do you mean?"
"I lost."
She stepped closer.
"You caught the person who betrayed you."
Marcus looked at the city below.
"I spent twelve years trusting him."
A pause.
"And I missed what was happening right in front of me."
Elena softened.
"Marcus."
"I built my life believing emotions made people weak."
He looked at her.
"And now the only reason I survived this betrayal..."
A pause.
"Is because I finally cared about someone."
Elena didn't know what to say.
Because she knew.
He wasn't talking about security.
He wasn't talking about business.
He was talking about her.
---
Three days later, Marcus made a decision.
A decision nobody expected.
He resigned from several positions within his organization.
He handed control to trusted people.
He started destroying the empire built on fear.
Elena watched from the doorway of his office.
"You are really doing this?"
Marcus looked up.
"Yes."
"Why?"
He smiled faintly.
"Because I spent years building something that everyone feared."
A pause.
"I want to build something people can trust."
Elena smiled.
"That sounds almost normal."
Marcus raised an eyebrow.
"Almost?"
"You still have a terrifying office."
"I can change the office."
"No."
She looked around.
"Keep the office."
"Why?"
"Because I like reminding you that I walked into this place with a broom."
For the first time…
Marcus laughed.
A real laugh.
And Elena realized something.
May you like
The most feared man in the city had finally become human.
