Chapter 2 - The Secret Hidden Beneath His Empty Chair

The dining room remained silent.

Nobody touched their drink.

Nobody moved.

Because everyone understood something had changed.

For five weeks, Caleb Mercer had controlled the story.

Adrian was injured.

Adrian was weak.

Adrian needed help.

But Hannah Brooks had just introduced a different possibility.

Maybe Adrian had never been the person in danger.

Maybe someone else was.

Caleb stared at her.

“You’re making a serious mistake.”

Hannah looked at him.

“No.”

Her voice remained calm.

“I made a mistake twelve years ago.”

The room watched.

Caleb narrowed his eyes.

“What mistake?”

“Believing powerful people always deserved respect.”

A few men shifted uncomfortably.

Adrian studied her.

“What is under my chair?”

Hannah looked at him.

“Not this chair.”

She glanced at the wooden seat beneath him.

“Your real chair.”

Caleb stood.

“Enough.”

Adrian immediately noticed.

Not anger.

Fear.

A man like Caleb did not fear accusations.

He feared evidence.

“Sit down,” Adrian said.

Caleb froze.

The command was weak.

But familiar.

For a second, everyone remembered who Adrian Mercer was.

Caleb slowly sat.

Adrian turned back to Hannah.

“Tell me everything.”

Hannah took a breath.

“Three weeks ago, I was cleaning your office.”

Caleb interrupted.

“You were not allowed inside his office.”

Hannah looked at him.

“I cleaned that office every Monday for twelve years.”

Nobody answered.

She continued.

“I found something unusual.”

“What?”

“A scratch beneath your chair.”

Adrian frowned.

“A scratch?”

“Yes.”

Hannah nodded.

“Like someone had moved it.”

She looked around the room.

“Your chair was never moved.”

Adrian knew exactly what she meant.

That chair was built into his office.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody.

“Continue.”

Hannah looked at Caleb.

“The next morning, I saw Mr. Caleb entering your office.”

The room became tense.

Caleb smiled.

“You’re accusing me of moving a chair?”

“No.”

Hannah shook her head.

“I’m accusing you of hiding something.”

Howard Price closed his briefcase.

“This is ridiculous.”

Hannah looked at him.

“Is it?”

The attorney said nothing.

She continued.

“After Mr. Caleb left, I checked underneath.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“What did you find?”

“A small compartment.”

Silence.

“Inside?”

Hannah looked at him.

“A flash drive.”

Caleb immediately stood.

Adrian's eyes sharpened.

That reaction answered everything.

“Sit.”

Caleb didn't move.

For the first time that evening, he looked uncertain.

Adrian spoke again.

“Sit down.”

Slowly.

Caleb sat.

Hannah continued.

“I didn't open it.”

“Why?”

“Because it wasn't mine.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Then why tell me now?”

Hannah's expression changed.

“Because tonight was not about taking your chair.”

She looked around the room.

“It was about making sure everyone believed you had already lost.”

The words hit harder than any accusation.

Adrian stared at Caleb.

“How many people know?”

Nobody answered.

Then one man at the table slowly raised his hand.

A senior adviser.

Marcus Bell.

Adrian looked at him.

“You?”

Marcus swallowed.

“I didn't know about the drive.”

“But you knew about tonight.”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

That was enough.

Adrian looked back at Caleb.

“You planned a coup.”

Caleb's jaw tightened.

“I planned stability.”

“No.”

Adrian shook his head.

“You planned my funeral while I was still alive.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Hannah walked to the service doorway.

“I brought the chair.”

Everyone looked confused.

“The real one.”

Two staff members appeared carrying Adrian's black leather chair.

The chair from his office.

The chair everyone thought had been removed.

They placed it near the table.

Adrian looked at it.

For twenty years, men had feared that chair.

But tonight he understood something.

The power had never been the chair.

It had always been the people who knew what was hidden beneath it.

Hannah handed him the flash drive.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Adrian looked at her.

“Thank you.”

She nodded.

“Don't thank me yet.”

“Why?”

Her eyes moved toward Caleb.

“Because whatever is on that drive…”

She paused.

“It will show you who was really responsible for what happened outside the courthouse.”

The room went completely silent.

Adrian slowly closed his hand around the drive.

Because suddenly, his brother was no longer the biggest betrayal.

Someone else had pulled the trigger.

And that person was still sitting at the table.
