Chapter 3 - The File That Revealed The Enemy Inside His Family

The dining room remained frozen.
Nobody wanted to be the first person to speak.
Because everyone understood what the flash drive represented.
Not just evidence.
Power.
Adrian Mercer had built his entire organization on one principle.
Trust was earned slowly.
And betrayal was punished permanently.
He looked at Howard Price.
The family attorney immediately looked away.
That was enough.
Adrian noticed.
He noticed everything.
“Howard.”
The attorney slowly raised his eyes.
“Yes, Adrian?”
“How long have you known about the flash drive?”
Howard hesitated.
A mistake.
A small one.
But Adrian had spent twenty years finding weaknesses in powerful men.
“Answer.”
Howard adjusted his glasses.
“I didn't know exactly what was on it.”
“That wasn't my question.”
The attorney remained silent.
Adrian leaned back.
His injured leg hurt.
His shoulder burned.
But his voice remained steady.
“How long?”
Howard sighed.
“Two weeks.”
The room exploded into whispers.
Adrian looked at him.
“Two weeks.”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing.”
Howard lowered his voice.
“Because I was told it was safer.”
“By who?”
Nobody moved.
Then Adrian looked toward Caleb.
His brother said nothing.
That silence was confirmation.
Adrian slowly stood.
Hannah immediately moved forward.
“Mr. Mercer—”
“I can stand.”
She stopped.
Not because she believed he wasn't in pain.
Because she understood.
This was not about walking.
This was about showing them he still could.
Adrian reached the laptop on the side table.
“Open it.”
Howard shook his head.
“Adrian, you need to understand—”
“No.”
Adrian looked at him.
“You need to understand.”
The room went silent.
“I was shot.”
His eyes moved around the table.
“I lost five weeks of my life recovering.”
He looked at Caleb.
“And while I was learning how to walk again, my own family was learning how to replace me.”
Nobody spoke.
Hannah connected the drive.
The screen lit up.
Folders appeared.
Financial records.
Private conversations.
Meeting schedules.
Then one file caught everyone's attention.
PROJECT MERCER TRANSITION.
Adrian stared.
“Open it.”
Hannah clicked.
The first document appeared.
A leadership replacement plan.
The second.
A list of names.
The third.
A payment record.
Adrian's expression changed.
Because one name appeared repeatedly.
Marcus Bell.
The senior adviser who had sat silently at the table.
Marcus immediately stood.
“This is impossible.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Sit.”
Marcus froze.
“I didn't—”
“Sit.”
This time, everyone heard the old Adrian.
The one who commanded rooms.
Marcus slowly sat.
Adrian continued reading.
Payments.
Transfers.
Secret meetings.
And then he found the date.
The day before the courthouse attack.
His eyes narrowed.
“They knew.”
Caleb looked uncomfortable.
Adrian turned.
“You knew I was going to the courthouse.”
Caleb shook his head.
“No.”
“Then explain why this file was created the day before I was shot.”
Nobody answered.
Hannah looked at the screen.
“There is another folder.”
Adrian turned.
“What folder?”
She pointed.
“Hidden.”
The folder was encrypted.
Howard immediately spoke.
“Don't open that.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Why?”
The attorney said nothing.
Adrian smiled coldly.
“That was the wrong answer.”
Hannah opened the folder.
A video file appeared.
The room became completely silent.
Adrian clicked play.
The recording showed a private meeting.
Caleb.
Marcus.
Howard.
And another person.
A man Adrian had known for fifteen years.
His security chief.
Daniel Cross.
Adrian stared.
Daniel had been the man who planned his protection.
The man who checked every route.
The man who stood outside his bedroom door.
The video continued.
Caleb spoke.
“We only need him gone temporarily.”
Marcus asked:
“And if he survives?”
Caleb answered:
“Then we convince everyone he is no longer capable.”
Adrian's hand tightened.
But he remained silent.
Then Daniel spoke.
“After the courthouse?”
Everyone stopped.
Adrian looked closer.
The date.
The meeting happened three days before the attack.
Three days.
Hannah whispered:
“Oh my God.”
Adrian turned off the video.
The room felt smaller.
The betrayal was no longer a suspicion.
It was real.
His own security chief had helped arrange the attack.
Caleb finally spoke.
“You don't understand.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Explain.”
Caleb leaned forward.
“I was trying to protect this family.”
“You hired men to remove me.”
“No.”
Caleb shook his head.
“I tried to prevent a war.”
Adrian laughed quietly.
“A war?”
His eyes became colder.
“You created one.”
Caleb looked around.
“You think these men will follow you forever?”
Adrian looked at the table.
Then at Hannah.
The only person who stood beside him when everyone else watched him fall.
“Yes.”
He looked back at Caleb.
May you like
“Because they just saw who stayed.”
