Chapter 4 - The Woman Nobody Noticed Became The Only Witness They Needed
The next morning, Mercer Estate was surrounded by tension.
Nobody slept.
Not Adrian.
Not Caleb.
Not the men who had chosen sides.
But one person remained calm.
Hannah Brooks.
She prepared coffee exactly as she had for twelve years.
Same cups.
Same routine.
Same quiet movements.
Adrian watched from his office doorway.
“You knew.”
Hannah turned.
“Knew what?”
“That something was wrong.”
She placed the coffee down.
“Yes.”
“How long?”
Hannah looked at the floor.
“Six months.”
Adrian was surprised.
“Six months?”
She nodded.
“I heard conversations.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
A small sadness crossed her face.
“Because people like me are rarely believed.”
Adrian became quiet.
That answer bothered him.
Because it was true.
For years, powerful men had ignored the people around them.
The cleaners.
The drivers.
The assistants.
The staff.
The people who saw everything.
“You should have told me.”
“I tried.”
Adrian frowned.
“When?”
“Four months ago.”
She looked at him.
“I left a note on your desk.”
Adrian remembered.
A small paper.
He had ignored it.
Too busy.
Too confident.
“What did it say?”
Hannah looked away.
“Be careful who sits closest to you.”
Silence.
Adrian understood.
The warning had been there.
He simply didn't see it.
“I owe you an apology.”
Hannah looked surprised.
“Mr. Mercer—”
“No.”
His voice softened.
“I spent twenty years believing loyalty came from people with expensive suits and important titles.”
He looked around his office.
“But the person who protected me was the woman everyone ignored.”
Hannah smiled slightly.
“You were injured.”
“Still.”
A knock interrupted them.
Adrian's security team entered.
Except Daniel Cross.
Because Daniel was gone.
The new security captain handed Adrian a phone.
“We found him.”
Adrian answered.
Daniel's voice came through.
“You should have stayed retired.”
Adrian's eyes hardened.
“You tried to kill me.”
“I tried to save the organization.”
“You sound like Caleb.”
Daniel laughed.
“Maybe Caleb finally learned from me.”
Adrian stood.
“Where are you?”
“You'll find out.”
The call ended.
Hannah looked worried.
“This isn't over.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at the city outside.
