Chapter 5 - The Empire He Chose to Burn

Adrien woke forty-eight hours later.
Helena was sleeping beside his hospital bed.
He smiled.
“I'm getting a discount this time, right?”
Her eyes opened.
Then she punched his uninjured shoulder.
“Ow.”
“You nearly died.”
“I noticed.”
“You promised.”
“I promised to bring Toby home.”
“And then you got shot.”
“Technically after bringing him home.”
“Adrien.”
He smiled.
Helena started crying despite herself.
Adrien reached for her.
“Come here.”
She carefully leaned against him.
For a long moment, neither spoke.
Then Helena whispered, “Did you mean what you said?”
“Yes.”
“About leaving?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
Adrien looked toward Mateo, who stood outside the room.
“Slowly.”
Over the following months, Adrien dismantled the criminal side of the Russo organization.
It wasn't simple.
It wasn't clean.
And it wasn't instantaneous.
He gave investigators financial records on the Bellini organization and several corrupt officials. In exchange for cooperation and because prosecutors couldn't tie him directly to several historical crimes under investigation, Adrien's attorneys negotiated an agreement that allowed him to surrender illegal assets while keeping legitimate businesses that could be independently audited.
Mateo entered the hospital room one afternoon.
“You understand half the city thinks you've lost your mind?”
Adrien signed another document.
“Only half?”
“You're giving up millions.”
“I have millions.”
“Hundreds of millions.”
Adrien shrugged.
“How many beds can I sleep in at once?”
Mateo stared at him.
“Helena broke you.”
From the corner, Helena said, “I heard that.”
Mateo smiled.
“I said she improved you.”
“You absolutely did not.”
Adrien laughed.
The transformation took nearly a year.
Warehouses once used for smuggling became legitimate logistics facilities.
A nightclub chain was sold.
Several shell corporations were dissolved.
And one legitimate Russo property became something Helena never expected.
She stood outside a renovated medical building.
The sign read:
THE TOBY JENKINS CENTER FOR HEMATOLOGY RESEARCH
Helena turned toward Adrien.
“No.”
He looked confused.
“No?”
“You named it after Toby?”
Toby grinned beside them.
“I voted yes.”
“You knew?”
“For six months.”
Helena stared at her brother.
“Traitor.”
“Rich traitor.”
Adrien slipped his hands into his pockets.
“The center funds experimental treatments for patients who can't afford them.”
Helena looked through the glass doors.
“You did this because of us?”
Adrien shook his head.
“Because nobody should have to make the choices you made.”
Her expression softened.
“You mean accepting money from terrifying criminals?”
“Yes.”
“Good policy.”
He smiled.
That evening, Helena returned to Adrien's penthouse for the first time since the shooting.
The leather dining table was gone.
“Where is it?”
“Burned it.”
“Why?”
“I hated that table.”
She laughed.
Adrien stopped in front of her.
“No contract this time.”
“No money?”
“No.”
“No rules?”
“Actually, I have one.”
Helena raised an eyebrow.
Adrien took a small velvet box from his pocket.
Her smile vanished.
“Adrien…”
He opened it.
“I spent most of my life believing loyalty had to be purchased or frightened out of people.”
He looked at her.
“You were the first person who stayed when you could have walked away.”
Helena's eyes filled.
“Technically you paid me fifty thousand dollars a week.”
“You're ruining this.”
She laughed through her tears.
Adrien lowered himself onto one knee.
“Helena Jenkins, will you stay because you want to?”
She looked at the ring.
Then at him.
“I need to think.”
His face fell.
“For how long?”
She smiled.
“About three seconds.”
May you like
Then she kissed him.
“Yes.”
