Chapter 6 - The Choice Between Power And Family

The message arrived at 2:13 in the morning.
I know because Adrian Moretti was standing outside my apartment when my phone rang.
Rain covered the city again.
Not as violent as the storm that brought Theo into my diner.
But enough to remind us how everything started.
I answered.
"Hello?"
No one spoke.
Only silence.
Then a voice.
"Tell Moretti the boy should have stayed lost."
My blood ran cold.
The line went dead.
I looked at Adrian.
He already knew.
"Who was it?"
His expression hardened.
"Someone who wants me angry."
"Why?"
"Because an angry man makes mistakes."
For the first time since I met him, Adrian looked afraid.
Not for himself.
For Theo.
"Where is he?"
"At the diner."
He immediately turned.
I grabbed his arm.
"Wait."
He stopped.
"You can't keep solving everything by destroying whoever hurts you."
His eyes met mine.
"You don't know what these people are capable of."
"No."
I stepped closer.
"But I know what Theo is afraid of."
That stopped him.
"He isn't afraid of losing a fight, Adrian."
Silence.
"He's afraid of losing his father."
The words stayed between us.
Because they were true.
---
When we arrived at the diner, Theo was sitting at the counter doing homework.
He looked up.
"Papa?"
Adrian walked toward him.
For a second, he just stared.
Then he sat down beside him.
Not across.
Beside him.
That small movement meant more than any apology.
"Are you okay?"
Theo nodded.
"Yes."
Adrian looked at his son.
"I need you to listen carefully."
Theo closed his notebook.
"Am I in trouble?"
The question broke something inside Adrian.
"No."
A pause.
"Never think that."
Theo looked confused.
"Then why are you serious?"
Adrian took a breath.
"Because I spent years protecting you from the world."
His voice became quieter.
"But I forgot to protect you from feeling alone."
Theo didn't move.
Neither did I.
"I thought giving you everything was enough."
Adrian looked down.
"I was wrong."
Theo stared at him.
Then slowly reached for his hand.
Adrian froze.
Like he wasn't used to being touched without fear.
"I don't need everything."
Theo whispered.
"I just need you."
That was the moment the most feared man in Chicago finally lost.
Not to an enemy.
Not to a rival.
To four simple words from his son.
---
The next day, Adrian made a decision.
One that shocked everyone around him.
He called a meeting.
Not with criminals.
Not with his organization.
With lawyers.
Business partners.
And the police.
He was ending the war.
His advisors warned him.
"You'll look weak."
Adrian looked at them.
"No."
He placed the watch on the table.
"I'll look like a father."
Nobody argued after that.
Because everyone understood.
Adrian Moretti was no longer fighting to protect his empire.
He was fighting to protect his family.
---
Three days later, the person behind everything finally revealed himself.
His name was Victor Kane.
A former associate who believed Adrian had ruined his life years ago.
Victor had spent months creating chaos.
The attacks.
The threats.
The manipulation.
Everything led back to him.
But when Adrian finally stood across from Victor, something unexpected happened.
He didn't raise his voice.
He didn't threaten him.
He simply said:
"You wanted me to become the monster everyone believes I am."
Victor smiled.
"And aren't you?"
Adrian looked at him.
"No."
A pause.
"Because my son taught me something you never understood."
"What?"
"Power means nothing if you lose the people you love."
For the first time, Victor had no answer.
---
The investigation ended weeks later.
The truth came out.
Victor was arrested.
The danger disappeared.
But the biggest change wasn't outside.
It was inside Adrian.
The man who once controlled every room he entered now sat every Sunday morning in my diner.
Eating pancakes.
Burning toast.
Helping Theo with homework.
He was still intimidating.
People still whispered his name.
But Theo no longer saw a feared man.
He saw his father.
May you like
And that was enough.
