Chapter 2 - Box 317

Lena Ortiz’s office occupied the eighth floor of an old building near Foley Square.

No marble lobby.

No armed guards.

No family photographs.

Just steel filing cabinets, legal books, and a woman who looked at me as if my reputation was an administrative inconvenience.

Emma sat on Lena’s couch with her rabbit.

Lena locked the office door.

“Letter.”

I handed it over.

She read all three pages.

Her expression never changed.

Then she placed it inside a transparent evidence sleeve.

“You followed the instructions.”

“You sound surprised.”

“I’ve met you.”

“Open the box.”

Lena picked up her coat.

“The box isn’t here.”

Twenty minutes later, we entered a private records facility where Sophia had rented a secured compartment under Lena’s supervision.

Box 317 was small.

Lena positioned a camera above the table.

“Everything is recorded from this moment forward.”

I inserted the key.

Inside were five items.

A sealed envelope.

A flash drive.

A birth certificate.

A photograph.

And a medical bracelet.

My breathing stopped when I saw the photograph.

Sophia stood beside Daniel Carter.

Between them was Emma, barely a few weeks old.

Standing behind Sophia was me.

I remembered the night.

Sophia had brought the baby downstairs because Emma wouldn’t stop crying.

I had held her for almost an hour.

“What is this proving?”

“Keep going,” Lena said.

I picked up the birth certificate.

Emma Grace Carter.

Mother: Sophia Carter.

Father: Daniel Carter.

Nothing unusual.

Then Lena slid another document toward me.

An amended hospital record.

Father: withheld pursuant to sealed legal declaration.

I looked at her.

“Explain.”

“Not yet.”

“Stop saying that.”

Emma’s voice came from behind us.

“Mr. Lorenzo?”

I turned immediately.

“Yes?”

“Are we in trouble?”

“No.”

“Mommy said grown-ups whisper when children are in trouble.”

Lena’s expression softened.

“You’re not in trouble, sweetheart.”

“Then why is he making the scary face?”

I looked at my reflection in the dark glass.

Emma was right.

I crouched beside her.

“Nobody is angry with you.”

“Promise?”

“Promise.”

She offered me her rabbit.

“You can hold Mr. Buttons.”

“Why?”

“He helps.”

I took the rabbit.

Lena almost smiled.

Then she opened the sealed envelope.

Inside was a notarized declaration from Daniel Carter.

Lena read aloud.

“Four years ago, Daniel learned that Sophia’s pregnancy records had been accessed illegally.”

“By whom?”

“We didn’t know then.”

She continued.

“Daniel believed the person searching for Emma was connected to someone inside the Duca organization.”

I stood.

“Impossible.”

“Sit down.”

“No.”

“Then stand quietly.”

She inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

A video appeared.

Daniel Carter filled the screen.

He looked exhausted.

“If Lorenzo is watching this, Sophia is probably gone.”

Emma recognized him.

“Daddy.”

My eyes snapped toward her.

She smiled sadly at the screen.

“That’s Daddy Daniel.”

Daniel continued.

“Lorenzo, I need you to understand something. I loved Emma from the moment she was born. Whatever the records say, she was my daughter.”

My stomach tightened.

“Whatever happens next, don’t let anyone diminish what Sophia and I were to her.”

He leaned toward the camera.

“Emma is not biologically mine.”

Silence filled the room.

“And Sophia never cheated on me.”

I looked at Lena.

Daniel continued.

“Before Sophia and I married, she underwent fertility treatment. She had been told pregnancy would probably be impossible without medical help.”

Lena stopped the video.

“Years ago, a Manhattan fertility clinic was investigated for improperly stored reproductive material.”

I already knew what she was about to say.

“No.”

“The clinic had a private donor program.”

“No.”

“Your material was stored there after a medical procedure when you were twenty-nine.”

My chair scraped backward.

“That sample was destroyed.”

“According to the clinic.”

Emma watched us.

Lena lowered her voice.

“It wasn’t.”

I stared at the screen.

Daniel’s recording resumed.

“We discovered the truth after Emma was born. Sophia ordered a private test because of a blood-type inconsistency.”

He lifted a document.

“The biological father is Lorenzo Duca.”

Emma’s yellow building block slipped from her hand.

I could hear it strike the floor.

She looked from the screen to me.

Then she asked the question no criminal empire had ever prepared me to answer.

“Does that mean you’re my daddy?”
