Chapter 4 - The Alliance Begins to Crack

By seven that evening, the Duca mansion looked as though nothing had happened.

Crystal chandeliers burned above the ballroom.

Politicians, executives, lawyers, family representatives and old-money donors filled the room.

The Rossi-Duca alliance was supposed to become official before all of them.

Vivian stood beside me in a silver gown.

Her smile was flawless.

Emma was upstairs with Lena and a court-appointed child advocate.

The DNA samples had already been collected.

Results would take time.

The documents would not.

Lena had spent the afternoon tracing Sophia’s evidence.

At 7:18, she texted me three words.

We found it.

I walked into the library.

Lena waited with Marco.

“What?”

She placed a financial record on the desk.

“The fertility clinic employee who accessed Sophia’s file received eighty thousand dollars through a shell company.”

“Whose?”

“Rossi Strategic Holdings.”

Marco cursed.

I remained silent.

Lena continued.

“The payment was authorized by a Rossi executive.”

“Carlo?”

“No.”

She turned the page.

Vivian Rossi.

For several seconds, I heard nothing.

“Why?”

“We found emails.”

She handed me printed copies.

Vivian had discovered Emma’s possible identity eighteen months earlier.

She hadn’t known whether Emma was truly mine.

But she had known enough to investigate.

And enough to panic.

One email read:

If the child is confirmed, the marriage agreement becomes vulnerable. Handle the Carter situation quietly.

Another:

Daniel should never have accessed those records.

I looked at Lena.

“Daniel’s accident.”

“We cannot prove homicide.”

“Yet.”

“But we can prove Vivian paid someone to obtain protected medical information and attempted to suppress evidence.”

Marco’s face went pale.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

“Did Carlo?”

Lena shook her head.

“Nothing directly connects him.”

Music drifted from the ballroom.

Marco looked toward the door.

“What do you want me to do?”

“Nothing.”

“Lorenzo—”

“That is exactly what Sophia asked me to do.”

I walked back into the ballroom.

Vivian approached immediately.

“Where have you been?”

“Reading.”

Her smile faltered.

“With Lena?”

“Yes.”

Carlo tapped his champagne glass.

The room quieted.

“My friends, tonight marks the union of two families—”

“Not yet.”

Every face turned toward me.

Vivian whispered, “Lorenzo.”

I took the microphone.

“There is someone missing.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Lena entered holding Emma’s hand.

Emma wore the yellow dress Sophia had bought for Easter.

She looked terrified by the crowd.

I walked toward her.

She reached for me.

I picked her up.

Whispers spread through the room.

Vivian’s face lost its color.

Carlo stared at his daughter.

“Vivian?”

She said nothing.

I faced the guests.

“Yesterday, we buried Sophia Carter.”

Several household employees lowered their eyes.

“She worked in this home for three years. Before she died, she left evidence concerning her daughter.”

Vivian stepped forward.

“This is private.”

“It became public when someone used Rossi money to steal private medical records.”

The room erupted.

Carlo turned sharply.

“What?”

Vivian shook her head.

“Father, he’s confused.”

Lena handed him a document.

Carlo read it.

His expression changed.

“You authorized this?”

“I was protecting the alliance.”

“From a four-year-old child?”

Vivian’s composure finally cracked.

“You don’t understand!”

Emma buried her face against my shoulder.

I lowered the microphone.

“Keep your voice down.”

Vivian pointed toward Emma.

“If she is yours, everything changes!”

“Yes.”

“Our marriage contract—”

“Is irrelevant.”

“Our families—”

“Will survive.”

“What about me?”

That question silenced the ballroom.

I looked at the woman I had intended to marry.

“You discovered a child might be mine, and your first concern was what her existence would cost you.”

Vivian’s eyes filled with fury.

“I spent years building this!”

“No. Our fathers built it.”

Carlo looked devastated.

Vivian turned to him.

“Tell him!”

Carlo slowly shook his head.

“I told you to secure the merger. I never told you to threaten a mother.”

Vivian stared around the room.

Her perfect alliance was collapsing in front of everyone.

Then Emma lifted her head.

“Mr. Lorenzo?”

“Yes?”

“I want Mommy.”

The entire ballroom disappeared for me.

May you like

I carried her out.

And for once, nobody dared follow.
