Chapter 2 - The Wedding Guest Nobody Wanted

The wedding was being held at the Grand Charleston Hotel.
By noon, the ballroom looked like something from a magazine.
Crystal chandeliers.
White roses.
Gold chairs.
A string quartet near the staircase.
Claire entered through a side corridor at 12:17.
She had taken perhaps six steps when she heard her mother's voice.
“Oh my God.”
Claire turned.
Margaret Bennett stood frozen.
Her blue formal gown shimmered beneath the chandelier.
Beside her, Claire's father, Richard, went rigid.
His face reddened.
“You wore it.”
Claire remained calm.
“Hello, Dad.”
“I specifically asked you not to.”
“I remember.”
“Then why are you dressed like that?”
Claire glanced down at her uniform.
“Because it's my uniform.”
“This is Melanie's wedding.”
“I know.”
Richard stepped closer.
“You always do this.”
“Do what?”
“Make everything about your career.”
Claire almost laughed.
“I'm standing in a hallway.”
“You know exactly what I mean.”
Margaret touched Richard's arm.
“Not here.”
But he continued.
“Couldn't you be normal for one day?”
Claire's expression changed.
Only slightly.
“Normal?”
“You know what I mean.”
“No. Explain it.”
Richard lowered his voice.
“Your sister has spent months planning this. People are here to celebrate her, not stare at you pretending you're some kind of war hero.”
A voice behind them interrupted.
“She isn't pretending.”
Everyone turned.
Jack Hayes stood twenty feet away.
Gray-haired now.
Broad-shouldered.
Dark suit.
Navy SEAL Trident pin on his lapel.
Richard frowned.
“And you are?”
“Jack Hayes.”
Claire sighed.
“Jack.”
He approached.
“Admiral.”
Richard's eyes narrowed at the word.
Jack offered his hand.
“Master Chief Jack Hayes. Retired.”
Richard reluctantly shook it.
“You worked with Claire?”
Jack looked at him.
“For twenty-two years.”
“Then perhaps you can explain that today isn't about her.”
Jack smiled without warmth.
“I don't think that's going to be necessary.”
Claire gave him a warning look.
“Jack.”
He raised both hands.
“I'm behaving.”
Then Melanie appeared.
The bride wore a white robe, her makeup half finished.
“Claire?”
Claire immediately smiled.
“Hey, kid.”
Melanie hurried forward and hugged her.
Richard looked stunned.
Melanie stepped back and stared at the uniform.
“You look incredible.”
Claire blinked.
“You're not upset?”
“Why would I be?”
“Dad said—”
Melanie turned.
“Dad.”
Richard stiffened.
“What?”
“I told you not to contact Claire about her uniform.”
Claire looked between them.
“You knew?”
Melanie sighed.
“I wanted you here. I don't care what you wear.”
Richard said, “I was protecting your day.”
“From my sister?”
“From distractions.”
Melanie stared at him.
“She's an admiral.”
Richard rolled his eyes.
“Yes, we've all heard.”
Jack's jaw tightened.
Melanie pointed toward her father.
“Stop.”
The hallway became silent.
“This is my wedding. Claire stays. Uniform stays. Conversation over.”
Richard walked away.
Margaret followed him.
Melanie turned back.
“Sorry.”
Claire shook her head.
“Forget it.”
“I mean it.”
“I know.”
Melanie squeezed her hand.
“There's something else.”
“What?”
“My fiancé's side has a lot of military guests.”
“So Jack mentioned.”
“A lot.”
Claire looked toward Jack.
He suddenly became interested in the ceiling.
“How many?”
Melanie smiled.
“You'll see.”
An hour later, guests began entering the ballroom.
Claire stayed near the back.
She recognized several senior officers.
Then more.
Retired admirals.
Marine generals.
Army officers.
Special operations veterans.
Claire frowned.
Jack appeared beside her.
“Interesting crowd.”
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Jack.”
“Technically nothing.”
A tall man approached.
Claire recognized him immediately.
Retired Navy Captain Thomas Reeves.
He stopped in front of her.
His posture straightened.
“Admiral Bennett.”
“Tom.”
He offered his hand.
“You probably don't remember this, ma'am, but twenty-six years ago you recommended me for flight training after my first commanding officer tried to end my career.”
Claire smiled.
“I remember.”
“You changed my life.”
Another man approached.
Then another.
Within fifteen minutes, Claire realized something.
These weren't random military guests.
She knew them.
Or they knew her.
A former lieutenant she'd defended after a command investigation.
A SEAL whose team's extraction she'd authorized despite political pressure.
A destroyer captain she'd mentored.
A corpsman whose family she'd personally called after an injury.
Richard watched from across the room.
His expression slowly changed.
Finally, he approached Jack.
“What's happening?”
Jack looked innocent.
“A wedding.”
“Why does everyone know Claire?”
Jack stared at him.
“You really don't know, do you?”
Before Richard could answer, the ballroom doors opened.
The ceremony coordinator whispered something to the military guests.
Claire didn't hear it.
She was adjusting her sleeve when Jack stepped away from her.
Then something strange happened.
One man stood.
Then another.
Then twenty.
Then fifty.
Claire looked up.
Rows of military guests were rising.
Men with scars.
Men with medals.
Men who had spent decades in uniform.
More than two hundred of them.
Claire whispered:
“Jack.”
He smiled.
“I told you.”
A commanding voice suddenly thundered across the ballroom.
“ADMIRAL ON DECK!”
May you like
Claire froze.
And every service member in the room came to attention.
