Chapter 5 - The Father Who Finally Looked Up

The next morning, Claire expected to leave Charleston quietly.
Instead, at 7:10, someone knocked on her hotel door.
Richard stood outside.
He held an old cardboard box.
Claire stared at it.
“What is this?”
“Things I should've given you years ago.”
She let him inside.
Richard placed the box on the table.
Inside were newspaper clippings.
Claire's promotions.
Command announcements.
Photographs.
Even an article from her Naval Academy graduation.
Claire looked at him.
“You kept these?”
“All of them.”
“Why?”
He sat down.
“Because I was proud.”
Claire shook her head.
“You keep saying that.”
“I know.”
“Pride that stays hidden doesn't help the person you're proud of.”
Richard nodded.
“I know that now.”
He pulled out an envelope.
“I wrote this after you got your first star.”
Claire opened it.
The letter was never mailed.
Claire, I was wrong about Annapolis.
She stopped reading.
Richard said:
“I couldn't send it.”
“Why?”
“Because sending it meant admitting I'd wasted twenty years being stubborn.”
Claire folded the letter.
“So you wasted sixteen more.”
He gave a sad laugh.
“Yes.”
For several moments, neither spoke.
Then Richard looked directly at her.
“I can't change what I did.”
“No.”
“But I can stop defending it.”
That mattered.
More than Claire wanted to admit.
At breakfast, Richard did something unexpected.
He apologized to Melissa.
Then Melanie.
Then his wife.
No excuses.
No speeches.
Just the truth.
“I let my pride damage this family.”
Melissa crossed her arms.
“You lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“For years.”
“Yes.”
“Why should I forgive you?”
Richard nodded.
“You shouldn't until you're ready.”
Claire watched from across the table.
That was the first correct answer she'd heard from him in years.
Jack joined them later.
Richard stood when he approached.
“Master Chief.”
“Mr. Bennett.”
Richard extended his hand.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“For showing my daughter the respect I should've shown her first.”
Jack glanced toward Claire.
“That isn't why we stood yesterday.”
“I know.”
“Good.”
Richard nodded.
“I understand now.”
Jack shook his hand.
Then he turned toward Claire.
“Retirement ceremony is next Friday.”
Claire narrowed her eyes.
“No.”
“What?”
“You're planning something.”
Jack looked offended.
“I would never.”
“You absolutely would.”
Richard surprised everyone.
“Can I come?”
Claire turned toward him.
He looked nervous.
Not demanding.
Not assuming.
Asking.
Claire studied him.
“Why?”
“Because I missed too many things.”
She said nothing for several seconds.
Then:
“Norfolk. Ten hundred.”
May you like
Richard smiled.
“I'll be there.”
