Chapter 3 - Daniel’s Perfect Story

By eight the next morning, Daniel Mercer was no longer the accused husband.
He was the victim.
His attorney, Charles Whitmore, made sure of that.
Claire sat across from Mara in a small interview room while Mara placed her phone on the table.
“You should see this before someone sends it to you.”
Claire read the statement.
Daniel’s attorney claimed a “private marital disagreement” had been deliberately manipulated.
It described Claire as emotionally distressed.
It described Daniel as cooperative.
And it suggested police had entered the home under “questionable circumstances.”
Claire laughed once.
“He works fast.”
“Daniel?”
“His reputation.”
Mara sat opposite her.
“Claire, listen carefully. Last night was important. It wasn’t the whole case.”
“I know.”
“We need the financial records you mentioned.”
Claire nodded.
“There’s a company called Mercer Community Holdings.”
“Daniel’s?”
“Officially? Mostly charitable property investments.”
“Unofficially?”
“I started noticing transfers two years ago.”
“How?”
“I used to do bookkeeping for him.”
Mara frowned.
“You never told me that.”
“Daniel stopped letting me near the business accounts after I asked about payments to companies I didn’t recognize.”
“Do you remember the names?”
Claire reached into her bag.
She removed a folded piece of paper.
Mara stared at it.
“You wrote them down?”
“Not just them.”
Claire unfolded the page.
Account numbers.
Dates.
Company names.
Transfer amounts.
Mara looked up.
“When did you do this?”
“Every time Daniel thought I was making a grocery list.”
For the first time, Mara smiled.
“Claire Mercer.”
“What?”
“You may be my favorite witness.”
Two days later, Daniel was released pending further proceedings under strict conditions.
He could not contact Claire.
So he used everyone else.
Her mother called first.
“Claire, what are you doing?”
Claire closed her eyes.
“Mom—”
“Daniel says the police misunderstood everything.”
“He threatened me.”
“He said you were arguing.”
“He grabbed me.”
Silence.
Then came the sentence Claire had feared.
“But Daniel has always been wonderful to us.”
Claire stared out the window.
“Yes.”
Her mother continued.
“He paid for your father’s surgery.”
“I know.”
“He helped your brother get that job.”
“I know.”
“He loves you.”
Claire’s voice hardened.
“Mom, loving someone doesn’t make them afraid to go home.”
Her mother went silent.
Claire continued.
“I’m not asking you to hate him. I’m asking you to believe that the Daniel you know and the Daniel I lived with are different men.”
Another silence.
Then:
“I need time.”
Claire ended the call.
Mara, sitting across the kitchen table, said nothing.
Claire looked at her.
“Say it.”
“Say what?”
“That you warned me.”
“I didn’t.”
“Everyone loves him.”
“That’s useful.”
Claire frowned.
“How?”
“Men like Daniel depend on that.”
Mara tapped the financial documents.
“They believe their public reputation makes them untouchable.”
“And?”
“And untouchable men get careless.”
The breakthrough came the next morning.
Bell entered carrying a folder.
“You were right about Mercer Community Holdings.”
Claire stood.
“What did you find?”
“Transfers.”
“To where?”
“Three shell companies.”
Mara opened the folder.
“Daniel told investigators you had no involvement in his finances.”
“I didn’t. Not anymore.”
“But one account has your electronic signature.”
Claire went pale.
“I never signed anything.”
Mara looked at her.
“We know.”
Claire stared at the document.
Daniel had used her name.
Her identity.
Her signature.
If the accounts collapsed, Claire would take part of the blame.
“He was preparing this,” she whispered.
Bell nodded.
“For a while.”
Claire’s phone rang.
Her mother.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
“Mom?”
Her mother was crying.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire stood very still.
“What happened?”
“I found something.”
“What?”
“Daniel came here last year.”
Claire looked at Mara.
“When?”
“After Thanksgiving. He gave your father an envelope and told him to keep it safe.”
“What envelope?”
“I opened it this morning.”
Her mother’s voice broke.
“Claire, it has your name on everything.”
Claire’s blood went cold.
“What does?”
“Bank documents.”
Mara was already reaching for her coat.
Claire asked:
“Mom, where’s Dad?”
A pause.
“He went to confront Daniel.”
Mara and Claire looked at each other.
May you like
Claire whispered:
“Oh, God.”
