Chapter 5 - His Last Move

The ledger changed everything.

Daniel had recorded transfers for years.

Names.

Dates.

Amounts.

Private notes.

And beside several transactions was one word:

CLAIRE.

Mara placed photocopies across the table.

“He was building a paper trail toward you.”

Claire studied them.

“So if anyone investigated—”

“You were the explanation.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“I wasn’t his wife.”

Mara waited.

“I was his insurance policy.”

The criminal investigation widened.

Daniel’s public supporters disappeared one by one.

The charity board removed him.

The youth league suspended him.

Business partners stopped returning calls.

Then Daniel violated the no-contact order.

Not with a phone call.

Not with an email.

He appeared outside Claire’s temporary apartment.

She saw him through the lobby glass.

Her entire body locked.

Daniel stood on the sidewalk.

No suit.

No polished smile.

Just Daniel.

Claire immediately called Mara.

“He’s here.”

“Stay inside.”

“He’s looking at me.”

“Officers are coming.”

Daniel lifted both hands.

Then mouthed through the glass:

Five minutes.

Claire shook her head.

He pointed toward himself.

Then her.

Please.

Five years earlier, she would have opened the door.

Five months earlier, maybe.

Tonight, she stayed where she was.

Daniel finally shouted through the glass.

“Claire!”

The desk clerk stood.

“Sir, you need to leave.”

“I just want to speak to my wife.”

Claire stepped closer—but remained behind the locked door.

“You’re not supposed to be here.”

Daniel’s face softened.

“I made mistakes.”

“You committed crimes.”

“Don’t do this.”

“I’m not doing anything.”

“You’re destroying my life.”

Claire stared at him.

There it was.

Even now.

His life.

His reputation.

His money.

His consequences.

“You destroyed your life, Daniel.”

“I can fix this.”

“No.”

“We can fix this.”

“There is no we.”

His expression darkened.

“You think Mara Ruiz cares about you?”

“Yes.”

“You think your family can protect you?”

“I don’t need them to.”

“You have nothing.”

Claire almost smiled.

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“No, Daniel.”

She stepped closer to the glass.

“I have my own bank account now.”

His jaw tightened.

“My own apartment.”

Silence.

“My own phone.”

Daniel stared.

“My own passwords.”

She smiled faintly.

“And nobody checks my search history.”

Police vehicles turned onto the street.

Daniel looked over his shoulder.

Claire watched him realize what was happening.

He turned back.

“You called them?”

“You violated the order.”

“For talking to my wife?”

“For coming here.”

Daniel hit the glass with his palm.

The desk clerk jumped.

Claire didn’t.

Daniel noticed.

That frightened him more than anything else.

“You’re not scared of me anymore,” he said.

Claire considered it.

“I am.”

His confidence returned for half a second.

Then she finished.

“But being scared doesn’t mean I obey you.”

The officers approached.

Daniel backed away.

Claire watched through the glass as they detained him.

He didn’t fight.

He didn’t shout.

He simply stared at Claire.

For the first time, Daniel Mercer looked like a man who understood that his control was gone.

Mara arrived minutes later.

“You okay?”

Claire nodded.

Then shook her head.

Then laughed.

“I don’t know.”

“That’s allowed.”

Claire looked through the glass.

“Is this finally enough?”

Mara followed her gaze.

“For tonight?”

Claire smiled.

“You always say that.”

“Because tomorrow always comes.”

Claire looked at her.

“And after tomorrow?”

May you like

Mara smiled.

“That part belongs to you.”
